I had this problem, I thought it would be of interest to note it.

I have an early 2015 F56 3-cylinder.

I was getting this error code after every start P052B - Cold Start “A” Camshaft position timing over-retarded: Bank 1.

There wasn’t much to notice except it gradually became a little rougher when starting.

The dealer said it was engine binding, the paperwork says they replaced vanos adjusters and related parts. Vanos is BMW’s variable valve timing. adjustment unit in, adjustment unit ou, profile seal for cy, star-socket screw, star-socket screw, gasket ring, central valve vanos.

It took a couple of weeks to get the parts during which time I drove an X3 with all the stuff I didn’t get on my MINI, backup camera, heads-up, driver assist, sunroof, navigation, bluetooth, internet, leather. Too big for me, but if I could still get a sports suspension, and if I needed a new car, I would love all those extras. The backup camera was super and I miss a sunroof.

The sunroof on the X3 has a solid motorized screen. I looked into a lot options before I decided I had to delete the sunroof. A big solid sticker [sunroof delete kit] or replacing the mesh screen with a solid screen would be enough in my climate. I wish someone would replace the glass with aluminum or fibreglass.

Less than a quarter as many people will tailgate you when you’re in an SUV.

I’m very happy to be back in my little car.
