The Redline stuff usually meets the rating then of course like many aftermarkets exceed the rating by adding their personal wear additives. I run redline MTL in both my MINIs and its the best stuff for the manuals.
After reading most of the posts here, I'd like to add a bit to the way we're supposed to perform the fill up procedure. Yes, you can simply go with how much comes out is how much you put back in. But the filler tube is there for a good reason and here's how you use it:
1. Jack the car up on all 4 if possible, have it all leveled, this is the best case scenario.
2. drain like everybody states here (get an idea of how much fluid come out, that way you won't be too much off putting fluid back in).
3. Ideally, you should unbolt the transmission oil pan to get access to the transmission fluid filter and replace that as well (this is normal on previous generation BMW engines, I haven't opened up the B46 engine, yet, so I am not sure if this filter exists, but if it does, it's always a good step to replace the filter, too.).
4. When you are ready to fill the tranny case with new fluid, first screw the filler tube back in, but DON'T install the drain plug. The filler tube's extended height is actually where the level of the fluid should be filled (under normal engine running temperature).
5. Once the filler tube is ready, go ahead and fill the transmission fluid into the case until you start to see fluid dripping out from the filler tube, that's the OVERFLOW we're looking for. Leave the filler tube open with a drain pan under. Also leave the funnel on the tranny case to add more fluid.
6. Put part of your intake back (all you need is the MAF portion, won't need the air cleaner), and TURN ON engine. Let engine get to normal operating temperature between 185 deg-F to 200 deg-F If you're not that sure, you can use an OBD device which can get you that reading to be more exact.
7. At this normal engine temperature add more fluid and let it overflow while running.
8. Once it levels off to singular drips, you can install the drain plug and shut off the car.
9. Put everything else back in, and you've properly filled that transmission fluid.

Planning on changing my ATF soon in my F56S. Already got the fluid (Febi) from ECS but I’ve been looking on the realoem website to find out if there is a transmission fluid filter. It doesn’t really say there is one but don’t all cars have one (ussually)? I’ve searched for “filters” on the parts page and there doesn’t seem to be a transmission filter right?
Jumping in here with what I've found from the automatic transmission manufacturer AISIN.
AISIN makes their own in house ATF 6 that is compatible with ATF 6 83222355599 but also JWS 3309 and pretty much every other major ATF spec out there.
So what?
This means you are fine running Mobil 3309, Mini/BMW ATF 6, AISIN ATF 6 or even Redline D6. @Chazman had this right way up above along with @ECS Tuning .
@ECS Tuning - any chance you can carry the AISIN ATF 6 or is the Febi who bottles it for them?
We carry the Aisin brand in type 4, I will check if we can get type 6 yet. Febi is and aftermarket supplier and they make fluid to meet specs that the manufacturer does not release into after-sales because of OEM contracts. Its just the factory fluid. I use redline, its considered the performance fluid.

Be sure to use rust penetrant and properly fitting Torx pieces especially if the car has over 50,000 miles and is exposed road salt. The soft aluminum plugs oxidize and can easily round out. Had to wait two weeks for a replacement overflow plug from Germany.
@AznGuy I don't believe there is an internal filter. If you want to add one you either need to find space for a remote filter mount or use a Magnefine which is an inline filter.
Either way you are cutting your trans hose, just with the magnfine you are removing ~6-8" where as the remote filter you are plumbing new hose around.
Personally I'm waiting until I'm out of warranty to do a Redline ATF swap and add a Magnefine.
Just finished up the first transmission fluid change on my F55. Found out that Liqui Moly’s top tec ATF 1800 is said to be compatible with BMW/Mini ATF 6 mfg code 83-22-2-355-599.
At 63k miles I had some metal flakes and brown fluid when draining. After the change, the somewhat hard shift I had between 1st and 2nd is gone now. I am not entirely confident in the fluid level being correct but time will tell. For now it seems to be working quite well.
Motul makes 2 different fluids, Multi ATF which like the Aisin data sheet posted above list lots of compatible fluids but not specifically BMW ATF6, Motul DHT e-ATF specifically list BMW ATF6 by it's part number 83222355599.
Motul Multi ATF says it can be mixed with similar lubricants, Motul DHT e-ATF says it can be mixed only with similar DHT lubricants e-ATF type.
Both are 100% synthetic fluids where it's not know if BMW ATF6 is or not as BMW will not confirm.
The dealership's I contacted didn't even want to offer the service as according to them "its lifetime fluid" but when I pressed them for a quote they quoted me for a full drain and flush of everything at their marked up fluid price so the cost would've been $600-700.
I just did a simple drain and fill of ~3 quarts for $100 including tools/fluid myself.
Is the process identical for F54 (8 Speed Aisins)?
I presumed they identical, as 8 Speed Aisin is only a derivative of the 6 Speed unit, based on part number. But it would be nice to get a confirmation from someone who've done it.

Basically the overflow plug (the T40 bolt) handles just what it says - ATF overflow.
However, the overflow plug is screwed into a larger, 17MM hex bolt/standpipe combo. Undo this, and trans fluid will drain faster, simply because the opening is much larger.
I have the instructions (direct from MINI themselves) on how to change the trans fluid on the F56, as well as the torque specs. I am at work now, and it's on my home computer. I can PM you (and anyone else interested) in this information when I get home...

My Mini dealer said lifetime , I just bought a 2021 7 speed s I will be curious the transmission intervals on the double clutch .
The 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is made by Getrag I believe, and no doubt there is different fluid used and the procedure may also be different. I do believe MINI says it’s a lifetime fluid, however. (which I don’t agree with)
