Powerflex Upper Engine Mount

Hi all...

I just installed a set of Powerflex inserts, and for some reason there is a lot of space at the top such that the upper Powerflex is pretty loose. The mounts weren't leaking, the grease is from the silicone grease I used to help the powerflex into their spots.

Any ideas?

When I originally installed it.

After taking the car for a drive. You can see that the top right mount was pushed into the top right corner.

Looks like the bellow on the bottom must of leaked out and collapse a bit. New one below, i bet yours is past its life and you need a new one, then reuse those inserts to help prolong its life.

New

Torn/leaked and collapsed

Please select the correct ones for your year and model and replace.

The car is a 17 JCW and has 50K miles on it. I'm not the original owner so don't know if it's been changed.
Makes sense though.

I'll take a closer pic of the bottom of it and see what it looks like.

Yep, Glad to help.

Thats the mount you need linked above.

We see in high TQ/HP MINIs these tend to fail sooner. Good thing is you will have the poly to help the next one. We also have lifetime replacement.

I bought the motor mount (plus assorted bolts) from you guys ECS.

I was just checking the existing mount on the car, and noticed the trim bolt is missing. This means that the mount was likely already changed.

I’m thinking is it possible that the problem is the lower mount instead? How would I determine that?

Thanks!

Check the lower mount on the engine connection. Most of the time its just that upper side mount. Some people even do the transmission mount at the same time to make sure everything is good.

Yeah..I'll check the lower mount.

BTW question to those that have worked under the Mini...
is a 6" rise ramp enough space to replace the lower mount, or are you guys jacking it up a lot further?

I almost want to buy real car lift..but that would be overkill.

I seen people do it with a lower profile jack and piece or wood on the engine bottom, jack stand.

6" rise ramp and a low profile should work. I would also use jack stands as extra protection,

I haven't worked on my lower mount, but did inspect it during an oil change last night. Personally I would say 6" up would be a little tight, but doable. Only issue would be you likely won't have enough room to roll over under the vehicle...at least I wouldn't be able to only up 6". I use a low profile floor jack and jack stands to bring mine up ~8-12" when sliding around under there. BTW, I will be tackling my own upper mount replacement soon. YMMV.

Thanks for the insight.
I haven't worked under a car in ages, and only did so in older cars with more clearance.

I did find a video showing where to jack it up from (if it helps anybody):
