What wire is this?

Passenger side rear, right behind right exhaust pipe. Cant tell, but looks like green wire is broken and black wire is ok.

No warning lights.

Was just doing tire and oil change and inspecting underside.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Part of the green wire cames off

Broken green with black stripe wire

One side terminates to molex connector above multilink

The otherside merges with a larger harness behind passenger rear bumper behind brake light.

Appears its been broken for a while. Wire is very brittle.

Looks like ride height sensor cable.

I pulled this from the service manual. The molex end of the cable goes to the ride height sensor. Labelled "1" in the photo.

Now the question is if this is critical.

And if It would be a problem splicing in a new section of wire with waterproof but connectors. Pretty sure I have some 22 guage wire, but unsure if a slight impedance mismatch will cause the sensor to go crazy?

The other end of the wire merges with a wiring harness behind rear brake light, so totally unsure of how much removing and purchasing a new harness would be. Or should I just leave it alone?

Have no idea how that wire was frayed and broke. It is tucked up under the chassis and secured to floorpan, so something must have snagged it at some point because it was damaged right at one of the brackets that secure it. But how? It is well protected by suspension components and muffler around it.

I purchased the car used last year. Has been running fine with now issues.

uggh my OCD is on fire!

Following this thread, since I just looked at my Clubman (2019 S All4) and see the same wire on mine. Mine is still intact. It's a little better-protected on the All4 due to the drivetrain bits, but this could be an issue for me some day, so time to learn about it!

Some "it's not this" info:
It probably isn't https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=61_4842 , cable 3, the PDC sensor cable? I'd think you would notice a parking distance control error when you put the car in reverse, though...plus the wiring diagram doesn't show that the lines which run from the front of the vehicle, would be black+black/green...I recently pulled my boot apart and saw some wires laying on the metal floor, but they were all wrapped and couldn't see what colors the actual wires were. (wiring diagram for the PDC is here: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...clu/1VnbgrwC1k , you'd be looking at the connection between the A258 BDC to B41 PDC control unit, which should be red and yellow wires, sigh).

Well, poking around here: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...ring-diagrams/ might help you, if you can find a connection to anything in the rear that is using those color wires, you probably 'found it': https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...ring-diagrams/ . I'll poke around here but haven't seen it so far.

In the meantime, check to be sure all your rear 'odd stuff' is working. License plate light, rear cigarette lighter (if you have the storage package), the boot's interior lights, rear windshield wipers, rear defroster. It seems that the 'actually important stuff' (PDC, tail lights, etc) are 'smart' and will throw an error if a wire is broken leading to them. Some of the not-so-important stuff might not throw error codes though. I'd like to think that the electric parking brake and other stuff, would also throw an error if it had a broken wire but I'm not sure.

BTW the realoem site lists most of the MINI wiring harness connectors: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/par...ooper&mg=61#10 . You can probably just order new connectors, make a new wire yourself, and install it.

Helpful info thanks. Looks like the wire is really thin 22 guage. Problem is that it is 7 conductor and all I can find is larger conductor (thinner wire) counts. Since it appears to be a simple electrical connection (not complicated signaling), a slight different in impedance shouldnt matter. I think. 😁
