New camera thingy...

I noticed a new camera at an overpass on the A76 outside of Aachen, Germany and took these snaps. I was wondering if anyone knows what they are, exactly. Traffice control or speed/ticket camera? I don't see this posted by TomTom or other POI sites as a safety camera. Thanks for the help.

Cheers!

It's not a RedFlex camera, but there are a few other manufacturers.

Maybe it's one of those reality tv cameras. Appears to have a radar gun below. Are signs not posted before it?

Nope, no signs at all. Typically, in Holland, the mobile radar cameras don't have notice signs, whereas the static ones (including red light cameras) do. Just noticed that there's another camera just like this one at another overpass about 5 k's down the road. Thanks.

Cheers!

Down by Heidelberg thay have installed one that is built into the guardrail. It is really hard to see! Watch out for those too!

Hmm, looks like it could be a video camera with (maybe) an infrared light below it for night vision?? Is it very close to the border??

It could very possibly be part of the autobahn camera system to help analyze traffic conditions on the A76.

I heard of these cameras watching a show on National Geographic TV called Megastructures dedicated to the inner workings of the autobahn. Normally, speed camera's are bigger in size to account for the red flash, radar gun, and camera.

Just to be on the safe side, I would take precautions as it could also be used to catch speeders.

The one built into the guardrail got me. I didn't even see it until it flashed. Apparently they were able to get the radar and camera into a very small package and mount it into the guardrail. I actually went back around to find it after it flashed me and couldn't beleive it. Oh well, I slow down along that part of the autobahn now.

I was zipping along a bundes strasse Friday, actually doing the exact posted speed limit, and getting angry looks from the guy in the car behind me. Then I noted, up ahead, the portable speed camera set up. We both hit it at the posted speed, and he didn't see the camera until he was right up on it. His scowl turned into a smile and a big thumbs up.

For once, it paid to follow the posted speed limits.....

Just a quick note that they've removed all but one of these cameras off the A76 around Aachen. Dunno where to or what for. At this point I'm guessing that these have something to do with the bahn controls, though there are no bahn control signs near these overpasses. So, I'll keep aware of them and wait to see if I get a polite notice in the mail otherwise.

Cheers!

It is a traffic control camera, but beware, they can issue tickets (day light only) from this camera.

They have them in Regensberg as well.

It was actually over on A6 between Manheim and the A5/A6 interchange. There is a section in there where they put in some new guardrail by an overpass. This whole section is only 120kph and I was just "going with the flow" and it got me. I do the speed limit there now or just a bit over.

Also, I drive by it every weekend and I have noticed that it does not work all of the time. Kind of like some the "normal" cameras, you can tell when they have the camera in them or not. The bottom hole will be black if there is no camera mounted in it. So I think that it kind of works the same way even though you cannot tell if it has the camera or not. They take the camera out to do maintenance or whatever they do with it and then put it back in when they are done.

I am thinking about getting the Valentine One radar detector. I have heard they work well for the cameras over here.
