Electronic Water Pump?

Has anyone tried to take off the stock water pump and replace it with a electronic one? I have been really thinking it over and I am most likely going to take this mission on.

my 19% pulley is spinnin that thing like crazy, and I dont want to risk it. so lets hear it if anyone has gone this route.

Yep...

the twin screw kit out of Europe uses a 6 series electric water pump. The M62 kit that SpiderX is working on has one, and a couple of other people are doing or have done it. I thought about it a while ago and found some guy who makes pumps for racecars, but they didn't have the lifetime (or the cost) of the one in the twinscrew kit.

It's a great idea! Go for it and post details...

I'll be doing it soon. I have it all planned out and know what parts will need to be made. Dave at DDM was great in helping me out. He may offer a kit at some point, but I think it's on his back burner right now.

I will be doing this soon as my SC is coming off. According to FBR they are having great luck with this setup.

Getting power out of electric water pumps is

an old drag racing trick. Neat thing is that you don't give up crank energy to turn it, and you can use power when the motor has extra to use to charge the battery! Should be worth 4-8 HP...

I will gladly do it if anyone can provide a parts list and specifics about what is needed. Can anyone provide this list?
Thanks

yeah thats what I had hoped for. i know that without the extra strain on the crank some hp gains would be expected.

I have been doing some research and will be starting the buying of parts soon. good luck to anyone that trys it, and I would love to hear about anyones experiences.

You need a pump, a relay to control it, and a thermoswitch to control the relay. An adjustable one would be nice, and I think some of the fan controllers should do this real nice....

You also need a bunch of hose, and the only routing issue is that the stock pump has both the main water feeds and the heater loop, so it's got three connections on it. You'd need to get a funky-Y (Two big holes and one little one) and put that in the right place.

Take off the SC, unbolt the water pump, put the SC back on, mount everything up (space it tight), wire it up and off you go!

With a description like that, who needs pictures?

May I ask why you need a t-stat to contol the relay? Wouldn't you want the water pump to run anytime the engine is running?

I think that

you can save even more power with something that keeps the pump from running full speed when it isn't needed. The 07 Mini uses a solenoid/pulley system to disengage the water pump while the car is cold....

For starters you can have it run any time the car is on, but then you'll be running it when the car is on but the motor isn't running, and this can become a battery issue if you're prone to working on the car with the key in or anything like that.
