ALTA Light Bar wired to factory switches?

I currently have no front or rear fog lights, so I am missing two switches on the MINI's center switch panel. Can I buy a full set and wire them to control four ALTA driving lights (two lights per switch)?

Also, relating to the ALTA lights - has anyone noticed any cooling issues with four lights installed on the ALTA light bar? They seem to block a fair amount of air flow.

The Mini switch panel does not contain standard mechanical switches. They are simply contact closures that trigger commands in the Mini computer, so I don't believe you could use them as a regular SPST switch.

I have had reservations ordering this because of cooling issues. The question for me is if they can be quickly removed (for the track etc) with a quick release rather than cutting wires?

According to http://store.webbmotorsports.com/ind...&products_id=8 aka, Randy Webb of Webb Motorsports, cooling is not impacted "at all" by the lightbar.

Oh, and as for quick removal. There are several types of plugs and connectors you can buy and install yourself on the power cables. This would facilitate quick removal. But remember, the plug is a 'junction' in the wiring, and could lead to shock injury and/or damage to people or cars, if not done correctly, or left unplugged, uncovered, or poorly connected/waterproofed.

Talk to Ian Cull. He makes a circuit that will allow you wire any additional lights into the rear fog light switch. If your car doesn't have this switch.. you can order the entire switch bank with all switches in it for around $75 from Classic.

Ian's circuit will allow you to use the rear fog switch for the front lights, and it also can do other cool things, like auto up windows!

I am planning on doing exactly what I have describe above (I put in the factory driving lights myself and am going to wire them to the rear fog switch after I install it). Ian has confirmed that this will work with his circuit.

You can read about him and contact him via his website: http://www.gbmini.net/MINIcircuit/index.shtml

Be sure to ask him about this function, as it is not yet listed on his site.

Good luck!

Strom... also check out this thread. It describes an install just like I have described:

Dang it! I searched and couldn't find anything. At least others are benefiting from my ineptness.

Thanks wmba for providing the link to where Randy talks about how hard he's flogged his MCS on the track on a hot day with all four Alta lights installed, with ABSOLUTELY NO NOTICEABLE CHANGE IN ENGINE TEMP. versus stock.

That is about as reliable a source as you can get on this subject...

I have the Alta light bar, and LOVE it, both for the "rally look" and the lights perform so well...
