R53 ecu programming

Hey everyone I am new to the forum here and maybe I have missed some older posts on what I am going to ask about.

I am looking for a more open source option for tuning the ECU myself. I currently have access to OpenECU and tactrix obd2 cable which seems very similar to the Bytetronik tuning kit. When I tried to get OpenECU to read the mini's ecu it would not respond and just shut me out. Does the ecu need a second port hooked up to trigger the read/write mode like Mitsubishis? Or is there another way to get the ecu to go into read/write?
