Software Update with ISTA/P and K+DCan cable
Title says it all....has anyone successfully used the K+DCan cable with ISTA/P to upgrade the software in their Cooper? I know my cable works ( already done some basic programming with NCSExpert).
It's one thing to pay $30 dollars to BMW to get access. But if I need the $300 Mongoose Cable or some other J2534 compatible cable, well, that's a slightly different story. Unless of course, K+DCan cables ARE J2534 compatible.
Thanks.

To clarify: are you referring to using the official BMW ISTA/P Online software tool (which, as you noted, has a subscription cost), or are you talking about using ISTA/P that you've downloaded off the net?
In the case of the former, you must use a J2534 passthru tool ($$) or ICOM ($$$). An OBD J2534 tool is not the same as the OBD K+DCan cable.
In the case of the latter, a K+DCan cable (using a cable emulator and EDIABAS+IFHSRV32 as the interface) *should* work (although I have not tried this myself yet).
I've updated the software in many of my modules using WinKFP (I've upgraded: DME, SZL, KOMBI, CAS, RAD2). Other than borking my Bluetooth Voice Control (by not realizing that it would delete the enabling FSC code -
) it has been entirely uneventful. The nice thing about doing it with WinKFP is that it is designed to upgrade individual modules; ISTA/P normally wants to upgrade the whole car (which takes hours) unless you modify/hack the software into single module mode.
IMPORTANT NOTE: regardless of which software you use, due to the time involved you MUST have a good quality power supply hooked up to the car when programming or you risk bricking modules.

I was talking about the one you download and use offline, so that's good to know. Interesting to know about the WinKFP. I'd rather not have to go thru the HOURS of upgrading the entire car at one time.
And oh yes, I've gathered that no matter what, you need to hook it up to a power supply. This ain't like programming for the sunroof mod
Thanks, much appreciated.
