security remote receiver

I have located what I think is my remote receiver on my 2002 R53. It is a black plastic box that I located in the headliner by the clock. It says it operates at 315MHz making me think it is the receiver.

However there is no "antenna" coming out from it, and when I take it apart I dont find the "6 V replacable battery".

I looked in the rear and on the passenger kick panel and didnt find anouther receiver.

Any hints, is this the real receiver? My remote does not work unless I hold it less than 6 inches from the rear view mirror.

Thanks,
Thomas

On 2002's it can be found in the boot passenger side quarter compartment, "right under the cargo light". Your looking for a black box about 2.5"x3.5"x3/4" it will have one cable going into it, red wire-black wire-blue-wire. Coming out of the box you will see 1 coaxial cable "antenna". Inside the box you will find a circuit board and a rechargable battery "6 volt panasonic". The battery is protection from the disconnection of thr car battery you don't lose your keyless remote programming.

Took apart the rear passenger boot and there was no such box there.

That's different from anything I've ever heard before.

I've always seen the remote receiver described as being in the headliner area above the mirror (starting from 2005, the receiver was moved to inside the mirror itself). This matches information in the BMW WDS wiring diagrams. No connection is listed for a separate antenna, so it must be an integrated antenna. The idea of a 6V backup battery also seems odd to me because I would expect information to be saved on the computer, not in the radio receiver.

I have seen eraly 2002's have them in the hatch area where I stated. The OP said he had a 2002 and that is why I gave him the info. Where is your diagram from?

It is the BMW WDS (Wiring Diagram System) software. There is an online version here: http://www.bmw-planet.com/diagrams/release/en/index.htm

U.S. keys operate at 315 Mhz, so that probably is the receiver box. I have verified this frequency with a spectrum analyzer. If you haven't tried a new battery in your remote that's where I would start. It is a CR2032; the shell is pretty easy to pop open- there's a place to put a small screwdriver to pry it apart at the top. Have the new battery ready as you have under 30 seconds to replace it before the key loses it's programming (so I have heard).

I would also try the key fob battery first.

Looks like this below.

Thanks folks, I have a new key & new battery for it a few weeks ago.

At this point I think the receiver must be bad as I literally must place the key on the windshield to get it to work via remote.

Riddle me this Mini Gurus - If I find a receiver from a J/Y can I reprogram my key to it?

**Thanks ESCTuning I actually got my car repaired there in Columbus while visiting family. 8-)

315MHz is definitely the remote receiver or the home link. They are the only two things that use that unlicensed band. I would try swapping that box out for a used one, it may have a damaged component called an LNA which would mean appalling reception.

My next step was replacing the remote receiver. I found one on e-bay for $26.00, bought it, replace the one in my car and "whammy" I have a 35 / 40 yard range with working remotes.

Did you have to do any key programing, or did the keys work automatically with the new receifer?

Dontcha hate it?

When a New Forum Guy posts on an ancient thread?

Well, sure. But I've been working on my new-to-me 03 for a few days trying to get the keys working. Doing the chicken dance with key on/off, multiple button presses, etc.

I happened on this thread, went to the junkyard, bought a used antenna box, and YES, it worked. Not programming required at all, just started working like it was supposed to. Both keys!

R/R is a little tricky- the passenger side of the box is retained by a funky clip, the driver's side by a torx. If you have a sunroof car the motor sits right in front of the device. I suggest pulling down the sunroof trim and the driver's side visor clip. The release for the connector is a small (tiny) tab on the bottom, but I didn't even try to release it at the junkyard- just yanked firmly on the connector and it unplugged pretty easily.

Thanks to participants here!

I don't believe that this box exists on the 05 or 06's. My key is doing the samething and I can't figure it out either.
