Installing MFSW and Cruise

I bought an 08 Cooper S without cruise. I couldn't believe that cruise was not standard. The dealer has a retrofit but it is expensive. My solution was that I found an 07 Cooper in a salvage yard with cruise. I bought the steering column along with the steering wheel at a very reasonable price.

I tried to get it to work by just changing the steering wheel but it would not program on the dealers computer. I then changed the switch that the SW plugs into (behind the steering wheel) and it programmed without a problem.

One more thing the car I took the SW from was an automatic, with paddle shifters. The paddle shifters can be removed easily, the only thing you have to do is jumper the two wires on the bottom right of the SW where you have unplugged the right paddle shifter. If you don't the buttons on the wheel do not light.

Hopefully this will help someone without cruise.

That does help. The dealership I was at yesterday said it was not possible. I can get a MFSW for 125. Then I just need a wiring harness, and re-programing?
What dealership did you use? Just curious so I can reference that when I call a different dealership in southern California.

I need the steering column too? Not just the MFSW and a wireharness?

Not the column, but you *may* need a different SZL module if you have an 2007 model car.

You could try car-part.com or ebay. But the problem with the SZL module is the part numbers are not readily available. If the dealer can find the part number you would need, I like to get my parts from parts.com.

There are a number of different part numbers for the SLZ module and it is dependent on other options in the car as to which one will be needed to make it work. There is a VERY LONG thread on this process here in the electrical section which explains the problems a few people have gone thru to get it to work. Some of the problems were did the car have Auto A/C or not di the car have the Convenience Access etc. It is not jsut a straight forward put this module in and it will work thing you have to have the exact right module.

The way to go is to get the MFSW along with the SZL module with that wheel. That is what I did, that is why I got the whole steering column to get both. The SZL module is the part that has the turn signal and wiper stalks coming out of it. You don't need to change the column, just the SZL and MFSW.

Mine would not work by just changing to the MFSW. I had to put the SZL that came with that wheel to get it to work.

The 07 car that I got the steering column from had the automatic climate control, my car does not. I don't think that would make any difference.

The SZL at a dealer is over $500 but there are some on ebay. If I can find where I wrote the part number of the one I have down I will post it.

The ZDL that came on my O8 Cooper had a part number of 61313451897. This would not work with a MFSW.

The ZDL that was on the 07 Cooper with a MFSW had a part number of 61313451901. This worked on my O8 model. Not sure if it will work on later models or not.

I just looked on ebay and there is one of the 1901 ZDLs for $75 or make offer.

I posted this long ago......

It took many months of trying to get a dealer to help me with my MFSW (cruise control) install….it has now been working perfectly for 30 months. I heard everything from ‘It can’t be done’ to ‘You need the convenience package first’ to ‘It’s never been done’ ect. The dealer where I purchased my car (Irvine) was worthless and never any help. They quoted over $1000.00 in parts and service. Well….while I was in for my first service at another local dealer (Crevier) they programmed my car for the MFSW I had installed months prior. For anyone considering this mod, my car is a 2008 MCSa and was built in Dec of 2007. The only part/labor it needed was the MFSW (easily installed myself) and programming. I had picked up a used steering wheel several months before for $100.00, but you could purchase just the buttons and achieve the same result.

Good Luck

Hoopty

Hoopty, you were lucky.

They tried to program mine with me just changing the wheel. The mechanic doing it said that some of the SZL did not have the internals needed for the MFSW even though it has the receptacle for the MFSW plug. When it would not program, I changed the SZL, took about 30 minutes. With the 61313451901 SZL installed it programmed with no problems.

I picked up a SZL that is for a car with DSC and No rain sensor. Mine does not have DSC or rain sensor. Can I install the unit and just have the MFSW portioned programmed on , or will the entire unit error out due to it looking for DSC ?

well a little more information about your car would be greatly helpful.

What year, model, and options does your car have? I ask because there is more to it than just the DSC and Rain Sensor.

I would install it and see if the cruise would program. I bet if the SZL has cruise that it will.

I have a 2008 base cooper. 6 spd, no DSC, No Rain sensor. HID's. NO MFSW. I bought the MFSW and installed. now I need to change the SZL. after installing tyhe MFSW I did go to the local dealer and when they tried to program the MFSW the software said I had the wrong SZL. So I bought the unit part # above from Ebay.If it helps, I also have the Cold Wx package.

I doubt if anyone knows if it will work till they try it. They were not sure that mine would work. I don't know what options the car had that the SZL was from. I would think as long as the SZL had the electronics for the MFSW that it would work.

It has been proven a number of times that even if it has the MFSW electronics that there are a number of different modules with the electronics and only certain ones will work with certain options.

Here are the part numbers and how they are to be used ( note 3992 is to be used on cars without MFSW as well and in incorporates all the components so it should work - but it is not a guarantee)

61313453992 -
DSC = Yes
Rain = Yes

61313453999
DCS = No
Rain = No

61313453991
DCS = Yes
Rain = No

61313454001
DSC = No
Rain = Yes

61319253770
DSC = Yes
Rain = Yes

61319253769
DSC = Yes
Rain = No

Revival of an ancient thread, but my '08 Clubman S has SZL# 61313451888. DSC/Xenon/ no Rain Sensing. Anyone know if it will work? Can't find any references to this part number. I'm guessing no. If not, what would the correct SZL be?

Thanks!

Update: with the MFSW installed, not even the audio switches on the MFSW function. I'm guessing I need SZL 61319253769 to make everything work?

OreoSAll4,
The part number on the SZL is located right around 12 o'clock on the module itself, easily visible after the wheel is off. Now if I could find a used one, and a dealer to re-flash the car, I'd be all set.
