registry error
I get this registry error when starting INPA:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\Serial"
May be there are problems!
If I close it, the Ignition reads on and Battery on.
Closing it I start NCSExpert and eventually get the bad vin.
Did the driver not install correctly.
I dont see any conflicts on XP laptop device manager.
I did change latency to 1

It's more likely that you have not installed the daten files correctly in NCS Expert. Did you run the laden.bat file after copying the files into the various locations?

Nope - if INPA is working and you are able to read information from any module with it then it is highly unlikely to be a cable problem.

IE, I load the profile, do the next two steps, choose R56, then CAS, then when it tries to read the VIN it brings up the error mention. (…VIN, not connecting to ECU or something..)

Is there a different source for the software and newest datens? The links in the OP don't work anymore.
Edit: Ok, I found the entire software suite and installed EDIABAS, INPA, and NCS Expert, but how do I determine if I have the correct datens?

Chernobyl: The Wizard
A big shout out to Cherobyl to ALL his help!
Good 'Ol B.C. Boy…..
Figured out it was my cable (yes, everyone who said don't skimp was right!), and ordered one from ecutool.
Excellent help and coded some features. Just gonna wait for my new cable and off to the races.
He is one patient man!
Also has the best choice in car colors…Sparkling Silver
Pete.

To load up the ORIGINAL factory defaults if you mess up.
Go to your /WORK/ folder. Open FSW_PSW.MAN, select all, delete, save & exit.
Load NCS Expert
Select "Expertmode" profile
Hit "VIN/ZCS/FA" to load your Chassis and Vehicle order info
Hit BACK
Hit PROCESS ECU
Select the chassis, then module you F'd up on. For example "LSZ"
On Pre-02 cars It will say "LSZ" and underneath "SG_Codieren" along with some files LSZ.Cxx, LSZ.PRG, etc etc. SG_CODIEREN is the correct job you want.
On Post-02 cars It will say "LSZ" and underneath "SG_Codieren" along with some files LSZ.Cxx, LSZ.PRG, etc etc. Hit CHANGE JOB, Select "FA_WRITE" Job.
These files are basically from your /DATEN/ folder and contain the proper coding information specific to your car. How does NCS know which files to use? Because it knows by looking at your VIN and VO, then selects the correct files. NCS will then basically read these files, then read your VO and re-write the proper codes, features, activate, deactivate everything to your factory settings.
The job is SG_Codieren or FA_Write because you will WRITE your original settings back in.
Hit EXECUTE JOB.
