Tuning my own ECU?

I am contemplating getting a 03 MINI S and I was wondering if I could tune my own ECU without getting a MOTEC ECU or something to that tune. I would want to pop a wide band in and tune away. Is this doable? I would want to change the fuel tables possibly timing.

Thanks in advance.

... or buy DimSport, which is what most of the MINI tuners use.

The car already has a DINAN tune on it, could I modify this? How is it that others can tune the cars but I can not?

The problem is that the software is rather complicated for this ECU. Because of this it costs a fortune for software that can do it unlike the openECU type stuff. The only way that you can modify it is to take it to a shop that has software that can do it (aka DimSport). Everyone here is in the same boat...
