Installed a Boost Guage Using Add a Circuit
Hello,
I've installed an Autometer Boost Gauge using a "add a circuit" by tapping fuse #42 (Cigar Lighter, Rear Charging Socket), but the light in the meter is constantly on. Which fuse number should I tap into so that the boost gauge light only comes on when the headlights are on??? Searching the forum, some suggest F30 or F33, which will use the smaller add a circuit kit, correct? Thanks.

From what I remember when installing my gauges, you need two power wires. One for all the time power, such as your fuse #42, to run the gauge and one for light power. I initially connected my light wire (I think to a red and white wire but there are two in the harness and only one of the two works correctly) to the instrument panel lights so that it would come on with the lights and be dimable (I might have just made up a word). However, I found out the gauge light would dim too low too quickly and was pretty much off at the level I liked the instruments (pretty low). I then connected the gauge light wire to the parking lights so the gauge light would come on with the lights but not be controlled by the dimmer. I had to use the Bentley manual elec diagram to determine the correct color wire and it took a lot of searching in the harness to find the correct wire. I connected to about six wrong wires before I found the correct wire. Sorry but I do not have the manual with me right now so I cannot tell you the color I ended up using.
Thanks Quickmni
... I probably should clarify that I had some one install the meter for me, which is why I did not know there were two power lines
... If it's not too much trouble, I would be interested in knowing which color line you used in your set-up, so that I can try to do the same. Are the wires located in the steering column underneath the tach? Cheers.

As schatzy62 points out, it might not be very useful for me to tell you specific wires that I used because they may not match your Gen2 wiring. You will need to verify wire colors using a wiring diagram such as one available in a Bentley manual.
I looked back at my notes so see what I wired to. For the ignition power (basci power for the gauge) I wired to the brake light switch power line. You can trace the wire up from the brake pedal. It was a purple (violet) wire with a black stripe and yellow bands (wire gauge was 0.75 mm2). I wired the ground to a bolt under the dash. For the light dimmer control, I wired to a gray/red stripe wire located in a harness under the dash on the left side of the drivers side (wire gauge was 0.35 mm2). There were two gray/red stripe wires that I found in the harness but only one worked correctly. I later removed the connection to the gray/red stripe wire because I did not want the dimmer controlled light. I then used front parking light wire (green and purple stripe) that is in the large harness that runs along the door sill and to the fuse panel at the drivers side foot well. It was a lot of trial and error to find the correct wire because there are so many wires in the harness.

Unfortunatley they do not make manuals for the Gen 2 cars yet. They are working on them but expect it to be at least another 9-12 months before production begins.

I am not sure if the R56 is the same as the R53 but for my R53, I used the the brake light switch power line. You can trace the wire up from the brake pedal. For the R53 it was a purple (violet) wire with a black stripe and yellow bands (wire gauge was 0.75 mm2).
