Retrofit smart phone prep?

so i am trying to find out what hardware and or software is needed to upgrade from phone prep to smart phone prep. so far what i now is that the smart phone prep was 6nf and that was not an option when i got mine. i am thinking that it should just be as simple as buying the wires and doing a software update. but i don't now the wire part number nor if a different module is needed. i have my service department trying to find out for me but so far no new news from them.

Hounding the service department may be your best bet at this point- I haven't seen any info on what's actually required either.

From the electrical diagrams i saw last time i was at the dealer (two weeks ago) the ULF module (bluetooth module) and a wiring harness will need to be changed. This would mean taring apart the whole dash as the wiring harness that is needed connects to just about everything under the dash. This would be a job that no dealership would ever think of taking on due to the amount of work and the cost (probably 30 plus hours labor). As for the ULF module (different part nubmer than what i s in your car now) you would be looking at around $1200 for the part puls installation. Now on to the programing. This may or may not be possible. There will be computer modules (footwell, JBE DMM, DME) in your car that will take certian revisions of software and the upgraded versions that have the smartphone prep software in the car may not operate on the other modules in your car.

This is not a simple replace this module with a newer one type of install as there are extra wires, extra software, different parts etc.

I was hoping to get it so that i could make a mount for my blackberry and use it as people want to use their iPhones.

But alas it will not happen for me. I'm not spending that kind of money on that when i could put a full blown computer int he car for that much and have much better sound and ease of use.

Yeah- I was planning on doing the full car-computer install when I first placed my order, at least before I found out that it was a CAN/MOST bus instead of the K-Line/IBUS. It's surprising how easy that little barrier made it to use the AUX port

i have no problem doing the work my self i have worked with electronics and cars forever. do you happen to know the product # for that module and harness? and if you don't mind how did you find all this out. talking to my service department has come to a brick wall i seem to know more than they do about the whole deal.

If you don't mind doing some work yourself, I'd suggest doing something like this instead- you could probably even pick up the armrest adapter and use that for the phone's interface, get the same functionality without the price of the new (and otherwise unnecessary) parts and probably less hassle to boot.

If you went the full-on official route, I wouldn't be surprised if you'd end up with a never-ending chain of wire harness replacement like Edge's stereo swap. Where replacing one module requires a different harness, that also needs X connector which requires Y harness, which then needs Z do-hickey and before you know it you're swapping out your mirror wiring.

i had already thought of doing that but i would prefer to use the stock adapter. that is the reason i started this thread. because i have yet to find anything yet that talks about staying stock. and i would prefer to do that.
