Electrical Modding rear fog to also act with hazard lights???
Modding rear fog to also act with hazard lights???
hello everyone,
i was sitting on my couch watching the canadian grand prix, and noticed that when the F1 cars come into the pits and are under the pit limiter, their rear brake lights acts like a hazard light on normal cars. that got me thinking, i have a rear fog light on my 2006 RG Cooper S and wondered if it would be possible to mod the rear fog so that, when i turn on my hazard lights, it blinks as well?
has anyone ever tried this or thought about it? just checking here first to see if its an easy mod or if it would involve going to the dealership. hell, it might not even be possible. any info would be greatly appreciated!
thanks,
minimic

On my 05, I have the Signal Dynamics Back-OFF XP wired to flash my center brake light and fog light any time I hit my brakes. Works great. Trace out the wires and mount it inside the left rear access panel in the boot. No one as hit me in the rear yet!

The easiest way I can think of off the top of my head would be to connect the rear fog to the battery via two relays in series. Have one relay activated by the left-rear turn signal, and the other activated by the right-rear turn signal.
That way, if (and only if) *both* turn signals come on at the same time (i.e. when you're using your hazard lights), the fog lamp will receive power from the battery and flash along with the hazards. If only one turn signal is lit, the relay associated with the turn signal that *isn't* flashing will be an open circuit and prevent the fog lamp from being illuminated.
You may need to put a diode in the existing foglamp power wire so that when it flashes with the hazards, it doesn't flash the light in the toggle switch as well.

+1 for Scott's excellent idea. Eliminates the possible over-current problem with the BC1 module.
Another option a lot of folks use to take advantage of the non-working rear fogs is to wire them up to be used as the brake light instead of the dual filament bulb. I just swapped power from the brake light to the fog light. Now when I hit my brakes the upper light (fog) comes on instead of the lower light.

Wow, congrats to scott! i think this might actually work. you are a man of knowledge. i wasn't sure if my question would get a real answer, but also knew that if i asked it here, someone would know. i will let you know if this works or not.
thanks again scott,

Let us know how it goes. The only thing I'm not certain of is how quickly the relays will turn on relative to the duration of a single "flash" from the hazard lamps. If the turn-on delay is significant compared to the flash duration, you may find that the fog lamp isn't "on" quite as long as the hazards. But I suspect the turn-on delay is on the order of 100 milliseconds or so, so the delay shouldn't be noticeable.
