Switch Help

Want to wire an "Oogah" horn into my car on a separate circuit. Attached are some instructions I found that match what I want to do, except I want to use a momentary toggle switch rather that the more-common push button.

Problem is, the only momentary toggle I've found so far is this. Can I use this? How would I wire it? Split the wire and connect each to two posts so no matter which way I throw the switch, it closes?

Thanks

You CAN use that switch if you want. Its a DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw). You can also use one of the switches off of our toggle bank if you are good with tearing stuff apart and soldering....

... in fact, that switch is beefy enough to run the horn without the relay, probably... (I'd check the specs on the horn before I did this)...

Horn calls for a 30A breaker, that switch is rated to 20A. Haven't actually bought the horn yet (goes on sale this weekend at Harbor Freight...I know HF has a bad rep for quality, but for 10 bucks I don't expect much...if I get it to work, I'll probably replace it with a better one when this fails...I consider this one a "starter" horn ).

How would I wire this switch to a one-in-one-out line?

That one uses a DPDT so you will have all but two unused. One in...one out

Does anyone know if they make crimp-on connectors for switches such as this or will I need to solder?

I challenge that. And I'm a Big fan of soldering. I tend to solder most everything. And if you have the ability, do solder it. But if you are going to run the relay, not only does the switch have to endure near zero current, it's only for a few seconds at a time. I mean how long are you going to lay onto the ooouuga before the guy in the car next to you removes your finger from the button with a bullet? But one thing I am concerned about in the circuit diagram - no fuse. Put one in between the power source and the relay.

Agree... crimp on spade lugs (standard stuff at Radio Shack) and plug it onto the switch...

I've crimped a buttload of connectors like this (and for me, that's a LOT ) with no problems... just use good connectors and a real crimping tool (NOT pliers...).... I mean, I watched a show the other night on how Apache helicopters are built, and they have hundreds of crimped connectors...

Thanks...and I plan to add a fuse. No brainer. As for the crimps, I'll look for some. Thanks!

Hmm...maybe Army POS's are different but usually the connectors are the keyed lock type and use gold plated contacts that slide and lock into place...

I'm talking about how the connector connects to the wire... not how the connectors connect to each other, or the device...

Crimp.

As well as how they butt-connect parts of the wiring harness to each other. Butt crimps.

That is a totally different crimper than what you can get at AutoZone or Sears. I've used that on A-10s and F-15s...totally different.

I usually crimp then solder my connectors. Overkill? Yeah, but I have yet to have one fail. Ever.

I understand that.
But it's still crimped.

And I'm pretty confident that I've spent less time re-crimping the two crimped spade connectors that have come off on me in the last 20 years than you have soldering all of yours... but to each his own.

I DO solder some stuff... just not spade lugs.

10-4 on the spade plugs, but like I said I usually over kill my projects.

If your gonna crimp anything....It should be the crimpers from the Daniels Corporation (http://www.edmo.com/index.php?module...03&cat_id=767). They make all that crap. Environmental splices and whatnot...
