prosport illumination problem

I just installed a Deft racing prosport boost gauge.
It is the type that you can have running white during the day, and amber at night, or vice versa.
I followed the instructions on the Alta website, and the problem I ran into was that the 6 volts coming from the illumination wire (gray) wasn't enough to activate the amber led once the white was on.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, where did you pick up power for illumination?
I tried another wire going to the center of the dash, and again....6 volts.

thanks for any help, or pointing me in the right direction.
I don't want to have to run a wire all the way to a parking lamp, or anything like that.
For the time being, I have it just running amber.

I may have answered my own question......
I think I had the OEM gauge lights dimmed.
That is probably the reason I had only 6v...... :impatient
