Wait. So you paint the front of the bulb? Pardon my ignorance here, but I am pretty new to modding. My MINI is on the way and I have spent the last 3 weeks building a ToDo list. This sounds like a great idea, b/c working on the amber lights was near the top of the list. I, too, thought about adding the $100 option after I ordered.

What kind of paint are we talking here?

Thanks for the help!

I got mine at AutoZone. They have a high heat Engine paint. Just get the silver color and apply a very light coating. You really need to wipe it down with an alcohol pad before painting to get it clean so it won't crinkle up. Make sure the bulb is dry before painting.

And it will still show amber through the paint when it lights up? Pardon my doubt , but I am just trying to imagine engine paint being transluscent enough for light to show through properly. Not trying to question you or anything... Just curious as this may be an inexpensive mod.

Pics of ones you have painted?

I don't have a good pic, but like I said, you just want a VERY light dusting on the bulb. You can always spray more on if you need. You should still see a hint of amber when you're done. This is from the previous car.

Nice. I'll give it a try. I'll make sure they have backup bulbs first! Thanks...

For those of you who dont want to paint your turn signal bulbs, sylvania sells the bulb for approx $12 per 2 pack at Autozone or do a search on internet $10 at Amazon.com. The part # for the 2007 mini is Silverstar 7507AST. They have a slight blue hue when off but are amber when on.

Now that is a price I can live with! Thanks for the info! Either way, it's AutoZone here I come!

hm.. which bulbs did you get from HOEN when you reference the chromium bulbs. It seems that the ones on the HOEN site after clicking chromium bulbs are exactly the same as the silvervisions. what size are the side markers?

I currently have a set of osrams that I can use and I"m trying to figure out the best place to get the rest of the bulbs as cheaply as possible.

Maybe we can make this the reference list for bulbs like this:
Front Headlights - Size - Recommended bulbs
Front fot - H8 - Recommended bulbs

Something like this would be useful for a long time.

I agree. We should put this together.

Side bulbs will be last priority. Recs for the tail bulbs other that the $$$ recommended above?

Like this?

Front fog lights - H8
MINI factory driving lights - H3
Front and rear turn signals - 7506
Front marker light (upper 1/3 above fogs) - W5W
Side marker/flasher - W5W
License plate lights - 6418 or C5W

As far as recommend bulbs... that's going to be a matter of opinion. I think the Hoens are better than the PIAA bulbs. Some peaople like the cheaper Hellas the best. I'd pay more for the UK spec SilverVision vs. painting. I also didn't like the blue tint of the OSRAM signals. See what I mean? Just depends what you're looking to get as a final "look" and how much you want to spend.

Hey. Please pardon my inquiries here. I dont even have my MINI yet but this mod has rocketed to the top 3 on my list. You can just say, "Shut up until you get your MINI. Check out your ride first." and I'll stop. I apologize for my over-enthusiasm. It's just when I see a damn Toyota minivan with whited out turn signals I get jealous. I shouldnt be getting jealous over a minvan!

Anyway to my question: Do the stock (non-white lighting package) tail lights (& front turn signals) have yellow lenses over the bulbs? If so, I would imagine my dreams of doing this mod just became a bit harder. Any ideas on where to get clear lenses to overlay these fancy white bulbs?

I now just focus on the yolks on the backs of MINIs now when I am driving. Damn. I wish I had gotten that $100 option now if the yellow lenses are a problem...

Again, sorry for the ignorance.

.

Well we could list a few recommended bulbs so people have the choice, but at least they have an idea of what is being used.

Also, it seems you bought 3 sets of the 7506, but where are you using them. I say 3 because you mention 2 sets of Silvervisions, then 1 set of Hoen chromium, but aren't the chromium the same as the Silvervision aside from brand?

Yes. When you order, you need to specify the "white Indicator Lenses" for $100. Otherwise the buld swap does nothing for the looks of the car (well, signal 7 markers, at least).

Yes and no. I bought the Hoen chromium side markers... and the Silvervision bulbs for the turn signals. The reason being, the Silvervisions have less of an orange tint to them than the Hoen bulbs IMO, but still put out a really bright/brilliant amber when activated. I've seen the Hoens and the OSRAM (Euro-spec blue tint w/orange) and they just didn't seem as bright to me as the Silvervision bulbs.

The place where I bought the Silvervisions had a great price (even factoring in shipping), but didn't have any of the side marker bulbs to pick from... since I was placing a Hoen order anyway... I grabbed them from there.

Do the 1/3 top of fog lights light up yellow?

There is a great deal right now at powerbulbs, two pairs of Osrams for the price of home AND free Phillip bluevision w5w. Not sure what you can do with the bluevisions as they light up white, but free anyways.

At the risk of stating the obvious, there's a NAM sponsor - Classic Mini - that sells factory parts to us at a discount. I would suggest sending Jayson an email about this and asking him what the NAM price would be:

bmwparts@classicautocampus.com

He's been real good to me - some of the dealers in my area charge above MSRP for parts, so I use Classic for most of my factory parts needs. Just be surs to mention your a NAM member in your inquiry...

Nope. They are a solid marker light, that's it. They are just a white marker (with a yellow-ish tint as stock when compared to xenons) since they do not flash in any way like the signals. The w5w bluevision lights will go into the front markers nicely, above the fogs. Since I wanted my markers, fogs and driving lights to be more of a "white" light to match the headlights. I odered all of them through Hoen (as described in post #1).

OSRAMs are nice. They have an orangey-blue tint when not lit. I liked the Silvervisions better, myself.

To get rid of the yokes, I installed a set of 4 Phillips Silvervision indicater bulbs ( http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk/default.asp?product.asp?P_ID=174 &strPageHistory=related), and two Hoen brand Chromium markers (http://www.hoen-usa.com/). All the bulbs have a chrome look to them, but flash a nice bright amber when you activate the turn signals.

After that, I took aim at the driving lghts, front fogs and front markers (upper third of the fog light lenses). It bugged me that the Xenons were so super-white, and the rest of the lights up front had a distinct yellowish tint to them. I bought some Hoen Xenonmatch bulbs (H3's for the drivers and H8's for the fogs) and a pair of Hoen Citylights for the front markers.

The change is dramaticlly different. Everything up front just seems more "tied together". I like it. It's not necessarily any brighter... but a cleaner looking lighting effect.

Very nice mods; and not so expensive too. Did you do it yourself or your dealer?

Thanks.

Myself.

If you can change a lightbulb, it's easy. A little tight to get to the taillights (tore my hands up a bit)... but do-able.

hmm... i think i will stop by an autozone tomorrow... actually, do they sell the bulbs at kragen? i would assume so. I dont mind the blue tint when the bulb is off because i think it will look decent with my car color!

From the hoen-usa site they list some Hoen Endurance yellow fog bulbs. These are for street use and not for competition, right?

Did you use the standard Hoen W5W or the LED version? If not the LED any concerns about the increased heat?
