Get the Alta CAI then ditch the oily foam filter and put on the aem filter
Not the most economical way of doing it but it works.

Do a google search for "AEM air filter" and you'll find lots of places to get one from. Cost me about $55 for the filter plus shipping.
I bought mine from www.StreetSideAuto.com and they shipped it the same day.

What is the general feeling on this forum - which of these 2 is best?
1) A typical cone filter attached to the end of the stock turbo inlet tube
OR
2) Something like the below which connects to the stock air feed and is sealed from warm engine bay air etc?
Has anyone had experience of trying both? I believe Forge make one like in the 2nd picture...

yeah... there actually is... defenders of speed makes one that pulls air from the pipe AND air from the bottom part of the windshield. i believe you have to cut a hole so it can get its air but they also sell their products with it precut oem part.

I just got the Alta JCW filter a couple of weeks ago and it is dripping with oil. Had to try to bolter out some of the oil to remove the extra oil. After two weeks, I also cleaned the JCW intake housing to remove the extra oil on the inside plastic casing. It seems fine right now. Do not know whether it is too dry now but will keep an eye on it.
The two things the Mini service tech told me to be very careful about oil from the non OEM filters and water from a Ram air (I do not have one right now but I am thinking about one). Either oil or water seem to cause lots of problems with the MAF. He mentioned that he already had replaced some, and not under warranty.

I did this today.. I took my 9'' blue AEM filter I bought last year around this time of year(I had a custom intake with the bottom half of the stock intake) before I got my Alta intake for Christmas...It feels peppier with the Aem on it!

ive been noticing some weird things that im not sure were happening before the DIY CAI.
When cruising in 6th gear, if i floor the throttle, it sometimes has a slight stumble before accelerating flat out. im going to put on the stock intake again and see how i like it.
Dont get me wrong, i love the mean sound of the turbo but sometimes i do feel too ricey with the BPV.
