Drivetrain Changing fuel pump how-to?
Changing fuel pump how-to?
Hi MINIers,
My fuel pump is dying (it makes a weird noise and it's getting louder everytime I drive my car) Since I don't know when it will die on me and leave me on the side of the road, I ordered a new one and would like to install it myself... I just spent $600 on my car for an oil leak from the oil cooler assembly. I would like to (at least) save a few $$$ and install it myself...
Anyone knows how to install a fuel pump on a Cooper S?
Thanks for any help!
(I'll take pics of the install and do a DarkMCS' how-to thread on fuel pump as well)

Which side is the fuel pump located? (driver or passenger)
Anything special to know about removing the stock fuel pump? (like fuel still in the pump that could be split in the car,...)
Thanks again!!
I thought I had read somewhere about access to the pump assembly from inside the car, thanks for confirming the info, that's good stuff to know.
you need to remove the seats... but after that its pretty easy..
pick up a wallbro 255/lpr pump, just incase you ever want to increase your power :D
the pump should just pop out of the holding unit...

Any special tips I would have to know prior to get it done?
I ordered an Alta (Wallbro basically) 255LPH pump because I need it ASAP and I thought it wouldn't hurt to get a better one (even if I think the stock one is good fo rmy mods... see signature)
Honestly the 255lph pump is overkill in your setup. Not too mention it doesnt sit as low in the tank as the stock one which means you run out of fuel sooner.
As for the removal.....The stock pump sits in a carrier inside the fuel tank that is on the Drivers side. It is under the rear seat, and all you need to do is pop out the bottom of the seat. You will want to make sure you are low on fuel or you will make a mess. Once you have the bottom seat out, you will need to unbolt the black cover. Underneath is a locking ring that spins off. That allows access to the carrier. You will need to remove the electrical lines and the fuel line off the pump before removing the carrier. Then you lift that bugger straight up careful not to tilt it as it will have fuel in it...As for getting the stock pump out of the carrier, you need to pop the top of the carrier off 1st then you can remove the pump. The new Walboro pump actually sits ontop of the lid not underneath it like the stock one....thus is sits maybe an inch or so higher in the carrier than the stock. You will have to change out the electrical connectors as the stock one wont work on that pump. Its not a real big deal, but you will need to pay attention to getting your + & - correct or the pump will run backwards. Easy way to test is pop it into the tank and pull the line of the injector rail and put it in a jar. Bump start the ignition and if you get fuel then u did it right. If you get no fuel after a few bumps, then chances are the pump is wired backwards. The pump will still run, just be sucking in the wrong direction. Just switch your + & - leads around.
Let me know how it works out for you. Calculate your mileage to see if you're getting the same. Last thing you wanna do is run out of fuel....been there done that...too many times now.
