You should email them. Perhaps he has come up with something.

it's cool. I just went with an rmw tuning party. Besides, i don't think behe would talk to me even if i were interested. I'm not one of his favorite people.

I should add tho, that if you are interested in ldg products calling him to talk to him is the best way to get information.

I believe the "dyno tune" us actually a custom Dimsport ECU remap. If you goto his shop he can also tune your car on the dyno. I paid $700 for the custom ECU remap AND a two to three hour dyno tune. I don't believe the price has gotten up to $800 unless you asked for more time on the dyno.

ALso, I don't believe he is doing ECU's by mail anymore because he cannot properly tune your car along with the remapping.

So why is three hours (and all that extra cash) needed again?

IMO that's for you to decide. John has his own beliefs and does his thing differently. The customer can make their own choice after talking to ldg and their satisfied or what ever customers.

Actually I think it was closer to two hours. But, honestly I'm not sure. It was my first time ever getting this kind of work. Maybe it could have been done faster...but not knowing anything about ECU mapping and tuning, I can't really say. After the initial pull and remap, he did do another 4 or 5 tweaks and pulls.

It's very hard to determine the exact cost. Each Mini and it mods are going to be different. I'm speculating here, but I'd imagine there is a cost for the tune, and thats a fixed price. The variability is the time on the dyno it takes to fine tune the tune.

The base flashes are $500. The dyno tunes are more but aren't really necessary for most cars with minimal mods. For example, an 02 - 06 S with a 15% pulley will make a minimum of 190whp and 170lbft with the flash. That same vehicle may get 4 or 5 more hp and a couple more lbft with tweaking. Most if not all of my dyno work is on heavily modified vehicles, race cars, and vehicles that have had a configuration change from na to boosted. The Mini is easy to flash. Most of what I do involves removing the ecu and then removing the eproms to read and write directly. On most of the German cars I'll use an emulator which requires further surgery and this controls the cost of the tune on those vehicles.

Would it help?

Would an ECU flash help on a "S" without a pulley, maybe to smooth out the RPM drop in the mid-range?

Thanks, Gene

emsjr - I found the Dinan "flash" helpful, but as has been discussed here, the flashes are limited in what they can do. John, above, said that the flash is helpful for cars with minimal mods, so that would make me think that it'd help you, too.
