Drivetrain John cooper works
>>Remember too that when you spent the extra $3000, not only did you get 48 hp, but there were changes to the suspension, wheels, tires, seats, and transmission.
No - accoring to miniusa.com, the works conversion is just the supercharger, head, exhaust and ECU. Also, according to Randy in another thread, he researched what the upgreaded supercharger is and it is just a regular unit with a smaller pully already installed.

Dave is referring to the $3000 you spend on getting an S over a cooper, not the JCW package.

I'm going with the Hartge program myself- 210 HP for about $2500 installed - and Hartge has a warranty program too, where if you break something becuase of their mods they'll replace it... or something like that. It's not quite as smooth, and not quite as quick, but with the money I save I can get a big brake kit, or an LSD, flywheel and clutch, or a killer system, or leather Recaros, or an Aero kit, or....
I think you get the idea. Warranty Shmarranty

I work for a North American motorcycle manufacturer (not H-D , the one that uses technology developed after the 19th century ) as a chassis engineer, so I get to see life from the OEM side of things. There is a *lot* of work that goes into developing factory-blessed accessories, and all of our accessories go through the same durability/performance testing as the rest of the bikes do. If the JCW kit has the full blessing of BMW/Mini, then you can bet that it is bulletproof. Well, more bulletproof than late model M3 engines, but that's a different story.
We've seen some interesting things with accessories in the aftermarket... they don't necessarily work better than the factory accessories... we, after all, have access to the CPU's source code, all of the design variables, and all the cool simulation/analysis software. We can also put "hooks" into the stock parts to easily interface with our own accessories, something we'd probably not be able to do with aftermarket suppliers without a nice cozy arrangement.
[that said, the mounting for the 'OEM' driving lights and roof rack is REALLY STUPID... drilling holes???!?? ack!]
Two thoughts on the JCW kit versus Randy's approach:
1) the JCW kit may have to be EPA noise legal if it is indeed installed at the factory. All cars and bikes, including H-D's, have to meet the same 80 DBa noise limit on the pass-by test as they leave the factory. Randy doesn't have to play by the EPA rules.
2) dealer-install may get around this
2b) What the dealer does may not be the full install. It may be just the final bit of install to make the car drivable. I doubt that they have dealers basically remanufacturing a good 30 percent of the engine. Does anybody know how loud the JCW kit is? They may have kept it EPA-legal, which would be a big deal-breaker for me. I've got a "look at me and smile" car, I need a "look at me and smile" exhaust. They may just be doing the exhaust swap.
2c) (suppose I should have said four thoughts...) I believe it is US law that the dealer cannot refuse warranty work if you didn't make any modifications that would cause that problem. So, the rest of the car would still be covered under warranty. Anything affected by increased power would probably not be covered.
3) (okay, five)... I'm finding it hard enough to keep within a bargainable neighborhood of the speed limit these days with 163 hp. I'd love 200 hp, but I think I'd rather have:
-Better traction
-More midrange torque [gee, can you tell I ride big V-twin bikes? For a real kick, try to get a test ride on our Stage II equipped bike. Now *that*s acceleration  Yes, I know I didn't say who I worked for. ]
-Even more midrange torque
-Better sound
-A death ray to incinerate deer in their tracks before they jump out in front of me.
5) I have no idea what Randy's margins are, but I GUARANTEE that they're lower than the BMW/Mini Dealer's. Randy doesn't have a big fancy showroom in every major city staffed by specially trained people (they go to BMW Snooty Charm School, I'm sure). Lower overhead; lower costs.
I'm really impressed with Randy's approach. His involvement in the "community" and his background as an engineer are huge positives. Anybody who's as open with information as he is is clearly doing the best job he can. I'm interested in hearing about the durability of the cars with the full treatment. How long has somebody driven a car with the overdrive pulley/ecu program/exhaust/etc.? Anybody tap into the OBDII computer and have a look at what's going on in the engine?
Randy, keep it up: Love the how-to's! I'll be calling when I get the spare cash.

>>JCW Kit: $5500 (+/-) for new revamped supercharger, ECU, exhaust, performance cylinder head, tens of thousand of miles of BMW testing before introduction, full BMW-backed 4 yr/50k warranty, California smog certification, no need to reflash ECU after service/software updates
>>
>>Non-JCW packages: I estimate $4100, for the following: ECU ($700, not including installation time), pulley ($200 not includ install), exhaust ($700 not includ install), intake ($200 not incl install), head ($1,800 not incl install), no warranty, no extensive testing other than what is going on right now in the field by aftermarket tuners, That gets me to the $4100 comparative cost.
>>
>>Does this seem like a reasonable apples-to-apples comparison of the two approaches?
Here's your problem with the above...pulley + intake + ECU ~ 205HP and 180 or so torque - MORE THAN THE JCW for about $1400 installed. Sure you can add a header (but there is one with about 6 or so horses for $750) and the magnaflow and have well over 200HP and still be about $2-3k less than JCW. Randy said it right. It has a place in the market and some people (not me) will think it is worth buying. And there's nothing wrong with that!

Just for some sort of relativity...Nicely optioned MCS $23000 plus the JCW package including install $5500 or more. That gets you in to the $29,000 range. Now this is definitely apples to oranges but, for a couple of grand more you could get the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. 270 horses, all wheel drive, room for 4 comfortably and comparative handling. Of course you lose the charm of the MCS.
As with everything else it comes down to personal preference. This is America after all and we all get to choose what we want. I probably will not go for the JCWbut, instead trick my MCS out a little at a time. On the other hand, those that go for the JCW, when it comes down to trade in time, will most likely get more for their cars than those of us who have done the mods on our own. To each their own!!

Sounds like you need a new pulley and a rear swaybar. The stiffer rear swaybar will give you better traction in a corner and the new pulley will give you more HP and torque. The pulley is a great mod and is included in the JCW package in the form of a new supercharger. It's the same supercharger, just a 15% reduction pulley.

Those HOWTOs are great aren't they? Andy is working on a OBDII tool for the MINI that should be really cool when it comes out. Some discussions have been made so do a quick search if you want to read more.
I know that the JCW package involved a lot of research but I am kindof disapointed that it doesn't include a stiffer rear swaybar and better brakes. SS brake lines would be nice as well. I mean the brakes are barely enough to handle the 163 hp that the MINI has.
I don't know, I'm very disapointed in the JCW package... I'm sure it is very high quality and I wouldn't mind getting my hands on those heads but I definately think more power is to be had from aftermarket items.

I know I'm repeating the sentiment of others but I just want to throw my 2p in. I was originally a big fan of the JCW package but that was when I thought they were doing far more magic to earn that level of $$. I'm currently at 14k miles and have the Rogue intake ($240/8 HP) and Madness swaybar ($180) on order. As I cook off different wear items I'll be upgrading them with the best I can find.
After some track time I'll need Stage I pads/rotors and I'll throw in SS lines on all corners ($900).
Rust in that oem exhaust? Get a Magnaflow SS on there ($600/13HP)
Total so far = $1920 for approx. 183HP, better SC and exhaust sound, better handling and better stopping.
By then I hope to be getting close to that warranty limit so the gloves come off since there's not so much to lose. Now we get to the fun stuff like the 15% Pulley ($200+$200 install / 16HP) and the latest generation ECU remap ($700/20+HP).
Total so far = $3020 for approx. 205-220HP (I know the improvements aren't purely additive) , better handling and better stopping.
If after all that I happen to have extra $$ to burn I 'll think about the optionals like a london stainless exhaust header ($1300/6HP) or a flowed cylinder head ($750/6HP). These options are pretty gratuitous in the price/performance space. Perhaps some springs but that will remain to be seen if it even needs it for a daily driver.
For me the incremental approach will be my path since it will result in a far better and well rounded car for less than the JCW and also offers the added benefit of giving me an excuse to learn more about the car I've become so enthusiastic about.
Of course early on I'll envy those of you who will be enjoying the performance of your JCW enhanced cars while I still futz with mine
Thanks for reading my rant.

My dealer charges $90/hr. So I wonder if they'll charge a bit less for charge 15 hrs of labor. Either way, no thanks. With an ECU and maybe exhaust, I'll blow the JCW away.
for that price of JCW kit on a MCS.... just get the new 300hp WRX and not only blow away the JCW, but almost everything else on the road, laugh...if straight ahead speed is your thing...I'll just stay with my mod of lighter 16" alloys and yoko tires which helped the only real negative IMO of the MCS, low end starts....but also greatly improved cornering which is why I bought the MCS in the frist place, otherwise I would have just bought the new Z for raw speed...BTW, saw in Automobile Mag WRX has a Euro WRX STI (not available in US yet) at 330Hp and 0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds....the MCS will never be a speed rocket unless of course Pugeot gets involved in 2006....

The MCS isn't the best speed rocket but with a few mods can be a real cornering rocket.
Flat out speed isn't going to happen- there's just not enough HP even with all the mods and the
JCW kit. Not to mention an overall cost over $30,000 by the time you add everything.
True the WRX STI is very fast, it is also in very high demand and isn't easy on the eyes. Give me a cooper or MCS to look at any day of the week. For $31,000 I can get an Infinity G35 Coupe. Very nice.
I'd consider a G35 before I'd consider the WRX.

Agree with you 100%, the G35 Coupe is a gorgeous car IMO, not as fast as the WRX, but you are right, the WRX is downright ugly, but as I said if straight away speed is what you are after, then the WRX is your ticket I haven't driven the G35 Coupe yet, but I have driven a friend's new Z. The Z is nice and very fast straight away and does handle remarkably well through the twisties, but the G35 Coupe to me looks cleaner and more practical than the Z with the 2+2 rear seat...even though it is 20hp lighter than the Z, sure it could easily be tuned to improve the performance....Infinity has a homerun with their new cars....had a freind that just cancelled his order on a new MCS after driving the G35....bought one that the customer didn't take, black, sport suspension, brembo brakes, alloys....just gorgeous....he won't get out of the drivers seat long enough to let me drive it...lol..so many cars, so little time.....

I absolutely agree. Now if I am so hyped up on the G35 coupe why did I so happily punk down $$$ for my MCS. Why don't I just sell my MCS and get a G35, and why am I spending more $$$ on mods for my MCS. I'm nuts- about driving my MCS but also nuts (in a happy way  ). I've got to be ME

Ok, first post, my $2 (you cheapskates  ):
I consider the JCW kit to be the equivalant of factory SS. I currently drive a '65 Chevelle Malibu SS, but need a good car for college coming up in a year or so, so I'll probably put some money down this weekend and order a mini. I would get a DS/Blk JCW from the get go, cause I belive a JCW kit will hold its worth. I figure I could rebore out the block and add some aftermarket stuff pretty cheeply (considering the car I am coming from), just to get up to my specs of drive fast, drive hard.
I need to be this w/o nitrous: Chevelle 350bhp, 300lbs tourqe. I know I wont get the tourqe out of a MINI, but the HP without nitrous could be possible with an intercooler for the supercharger, and that mystical turbo everyone wishes were developed. Anyway, everyone wish me luck and hope the test drive goes well this weekend

>>Has anybody ordered the jcw kit from the factory? I'm thinking about getting it installed on my new cooper-s.
JCW is dealer installed and I believe you must have somer definitive amount of miles driven before JCW Kit can be installed.
I got the JCW installed on my car this past week. They just arrived at the Florida Dealerships last week. I had previously put in the Mini Madness cold intake and did the Pulley upgrade with Randy from Mini-motorsports when he was in Florida just 3 weeks ago. I have Randy’s pulley in my garage due to JCW comes with their own and no reason not to keep the whole kit together.
After Randy’s' install the car pulled unbelievable. What an improvement. Well now, after the JCW it really rips. The cost is on the high side until you figure if you got new heads from one of the aftermarket companies along with new exhaust and pulley with install costs and tax it only comes out to a few extra dollars and the car is covered by MINI. NO PROBLEMS. I recommend highly. I know mine is the first customer install in Florida and a few dealerships had installed on their demos. Get the KIT you will flip out. By the way, I new there would be a MPG deficit with the modification but it is minimal as I expected. What a gas!!!!!!!!!
It is not that expensive when you consider if you did similar mods, to you MINI with after market. Example Stage one cylinder from MINI MANIA $1895.00 + Borla exhaust $745.OO + Alta Pulley $200, + ECU up-grade $700.00 - $999.00 + Re worked super charger $450.00 – $550.00 + install costs $920.00 - $1000.00 and tax approx = $4990.00 – $5398.00 and no warranty if your mini fails. Or Dealer charged me +5800.00 total price with piece of mind with factory warranty.

Or Dealer charged me +5800.00 total price with piece of mind with factory warranty.
minilee - But, did you upgrade your ECU with the pulley? I have both and get 178HP to the wheels. See the "more..." link below for a dyno graph.
I'd like to see a JCW MINI do a dyno run for comparison. What matters is the power curve.
I don't think you need to buy all those other parts to get 200HP. With 178HP at the wheels, my MINI with just the intake, pulley and ECU is putting out over 200HP at the crank and the cost was about $1500 intalled. With the $5000 I saved over the JCW kit, I have plenty of money to fix anything that MIGHT fail which is not covered under the warranty.
Let's see a dyno run of your car!
