We used a $2200 temp probe instrument used for aircraft development to get some temps today on the outlet side of the stock intercooler and the water-air intercooler. There are more tests to come with the larger air-air and the water sprayer systems. We found some very useful information.

Using several RPM ranges and speeds, we took outside temp and outlet temp and did comparisons. The next set of tests will compare inlet temp to outlet temp.

Here are some of the plots

Stock intercooler

4K RPM/40MPH (2nd gear)
Outside temp 58F Outlet temp 108F

10 minute heat soak at idle
Start temp 108F End temp 167F and climbing

10 minute heat soak with engine off
Start temp 108F End temp 131 and stable (stabilized after 7 minutes)

Water-air intercooler

4K RPM/40MPH (2nd gear)
Outside temp 56F Outlet temp 79F

10 minute heat soak at idle
Start temp 82F End temp 122F and stable (stabilized after 7 minutes)

10 minute heat soak with engine off and water pump running (it is electric and runs key on)
Start temp 81F End temp 117F and stable (stabilized after 6 minutes)

Here are some of the pics of the set-up.

We did several different configurations and loads with both set-ups and found very interesting data. More tests to come!

Cool can't wait to see the results on the Air-to-Air set up.

When you use a $2200 dollar tool to provide us with the best products possible, I think you just proved to us that you are committed. I think you just proved to me, and have been proving, that you are the guy to go to for all my MINI needs...

Very interesting. What you had thought is indeed true.

You have a 2 thermocouple (the wired probe) Fluke. If you need more they are easy to make. Specialty electronics stores have them. Just make a small solder bead at the end of the two wires and make sure the wires (bare part) are very short on the end.

I guess what I am saying is that you could do internal and external at the same time with that unit. You sure it wasn't $220? I have a similar model and unless it spits out a paper graph and saves ALL the data, you got ripped off.

What is the internal air temp? Not the case temp? That metal will bring your readings down a bit.

I would be hard to drill temp probe holes... Emotionally and physically.

The data does show a drop and THAT is great!

How do your temps compare to the on board diagnostic temps? The Fluke 54II is about 220, but whats a zero among friends  Just dont add one on your dyno charts!

I'm willing to bet it does more than just tell you the temperature...

Also I seem to remember hearing that Randy does some side work testing airplanes so I bet he didn't buy this just to test the temperature in the MINI. I would instead bet that he borrowed it for the day. (I would hope)

I've found the better quality non-contact IR instruments to be extremely reliable and accurate (as long as they are calibrated correctly and much easier to use.
