I just finished installing a SuperTrapp WaveTech muffler. It looks kool (see photo) and it saves 30 lbs relative to the stock setup. However, with 7 disks it's WAY TOO LOUD! I mean REALLY LOUD. I have tried 3 disks and it's much better (sound wise). It's loud at or near idle (much louder than the Borla on my Miata), but suprisingly quiet at mid and high rpms. In fact, with 3 disks I here a "whish" sound that may indicate too much restriction. I'm going to use 4 disks for now and consider adding a straight through "glasspack" muffler down stream. Eventually I'll sort this out in terms of measured power. For now, my butt dyno says the power gain, if any, is modest. Do understand that this is a work in progress and I will report any useful additional information as it becomes available.

Hey Rocket, you need to host the file online and link to it. You can't host via your harddrive. You can send me the picture to ryan@pdxmini.org and I'll host it for you.

Hey Rocketspeed, there was a guy on the MINI2 performance threads who was trying different numbers of disks on that exhaust and noting the sound change and also running it on the dyno. I am probably wrong but I think 8 disks yielded the best power, and after that it was just more sound and less gain.

why not use a MC bumoer so you don't have that hole in the bumper...

Hey Antranik, the guy you were talking about is Brian Garfield, but that was a regular (4" diameter x 18" long) SuperTrapp, not a WaveTech. Although both are made by SuperTrapp and both incorporate disks, the mufflers are quite different. One option I've considered is switching to a SuperTrapp like Brian's; I just hate to throw away $180. BTW: I drove the car in competition (Solo2) for the first time today. The car did better than I expected. Unfortunately, Brian Garfield could not come, but I beat his Dad (in the SuperTrapped Mini) by a fair amount. I finished 2nd to nice guy Courtney Cormier driving Richard West's (gowest's) Cooper S. I can't wait until I have shocks, springs, and some camber plates!

Hey CooperSpeed, I don't want to switch bumpers for two reasons: 1) I plan to install a trailer hitch that will use the central opening, 2) the cutout in the MC bumper doesn't match the WaveTech (diameter and position).

I did take a series of photos as I cut the stock system and installed the WaveTech. Much of that would apply to anyone who wants to make a custom muffler installation themselves. If there is sufficient interest, I'll get somebody to help with posting the photos and we'll make a new how-to.
