Drivetrain Exhausts, pulleys, intakes, and the SCCA
Alright....thanks to the great responses I got from my previous post, I've decided that I'm going to get the Magnaflow exhaust (for the chick-factor
) and EITHER the pulley or an intake (BMP or Madness). Now here's my newest question: I know the exhaust will keep my MINI stock in the mind of the SCCA. However, I know the pulley and the intake don't fall within the stock rules. So, will adding the pulley vault me into an even more competive class than the intake would? The intake would require me to run Street Touring, which would still be fairily competitive, but would the pulley mean that I would have to make the jump into the vast (money) abyss that is Street Prepared?

The pulley will actually bump you into Street Mod, which allows increase in boost, engine swaps and all the street prepared mods. It can be a tough class depending on where you are. Watch out for 200 hp Civic hatchbacks!
Brian,
With the pulley, you are pushed into SM1. That is a very tough class - 650hp Turbo Supras, big hp WRXs, Supercharged M3s, etc.
If you want to do SCCA, I would stick with the exhaust and get some good tires (Hoosiers) and run G Stock.
You can also change the camber with some camber plates, use a rear swaybar, lowering springs, do an intake, a header, and even an LSD (but no flywheel) and go to STX (which would allow you to stay with street tires - less $ per season).
Hope that helps!

Grr.. I wish that the pulley would not put me into SM1... now I have to decide what to do..
either do all out for SM, or stay some what mild and go to STX.. I'm placing pretty good now in GS, and really learning about the car.. I heard the magnaflow this weekend, and was very suprised by it.. it was not that loud at all... Didn't Like the tips that much though.. gunna wait to hear the UUC

Morales is right on that one. I didn't like the tips at all when I received the first Magnaflow here. After having it on the car for a while, the Magnaflow is now my favorite in the tip department - I look back at the car just to see the Magnaflow!
Mabye... not sure.. the other problem I saw was that the tips were rubbing the side of the hole where the tips come out.. and causing them to melt... is that a bad install, or likely to happen on all exhausts ?

More of an installation issue for sure. The correct mounting position has the tips protruding from the valence far enough to have the skinnier part of the tips centered in the hole - that prevents any rubbing issues.
