wasnt this question asked in another topic too? oh well, congrats on the mini. I have an intake and ehaust on my mini and thats probably the only mods I'm going to do, what else can you really do to the cooper (none S)? You could put lighter wheels to reduce weight.

I plan on doing the intake and exhaust, then eventually lightweight rims/tires and bigger brakes. But, I don't see why the intake/exhaust would hurt anything unless they were installed wrong... but you're taking a chance regardless. Now, getting into changing suspension components (all bad ideas in my opinoin anyways, but people still waste money on it...), THAT will void warranties, if anything for safety reasons.

No mods will automatically void the warranty. If something fails, MINI would have to prove that the mod is the cause of the failure. That's not to say they won't make that claim regardless. They know that the burden of proof lies with the issuer of the warranty and I know that the mechanics had no problems with my intake and exhaust modification except for a part I broke through my own clumsiness (airbox cover clip.)

Why not? Don't you have money left over from your Dad buying you your car?

I think there should be a "sticky" thread on this topic.

Sandman,

Welcome to MCO, and congrats on having such a fine father (at least in automotive taste!)!!

As far as non-voiding issues, it will totally depend on your dealer. I have seen both extremes, and everywhere in between. Some dealers have gone so far as to install aftermarket pulleys without saying it will void the warranty, while others have said even an intake will void the warranty. Talk to them and see where they sit on the issue.

Here is a list of mods that are usually dealer friendly:

cat-back exhaust
intake
plug wires
wheels/tires

Feel free to give me a call, and I would be happy to discuss options with you. I am guessing the mod you would be the happiest with would be an exhaust. The Remus, while it isn't a full cat-back system, is very affordable comparatively.

I'm not being trite when I say get dad to pay for a competition driving class. Tell him it'll make you safer (it will.) You'll have a flippin' riot as well (laughing in your helmet.)

When you're done you'll want a sway bar, springs, maybe lightweight (and sweet-looking) wheels, and again, you'll have way more fun w/your mini than anything else.

If you question this advice, go hook up with the local scca and beg a ride as a passenger with someone with a dialed in car. Won't cost you a cent and you can see for yourself.

Jeff

I looked at my MINI funny and a bunch of MINIUSA executives hopped out of the hatch and stamped WARRANTY VOID! on my forehead.

I agree with the other comments about driving school. Best money you ever spend on your car.
