2% crank pulley

has anyone using a 2% oversize crank pulley had belt issues. i have been thinking of adding one and i talked to the owner of lucky dog garage at summit point on sunday and he said if you add a oversize crank pulley regardless of make (alta, m7) you will be constantly shredding belts. please give me some feedback from those that have been running them for awhile. thanks

I think this should be in another forum, but I haven't had any shredding issues with my belt since installing a M7 2% pulley.

I believe it has much to do with pulley alignments, and I'm not real sure why a 2% pulley would take the belt out of alignment considering the amount of tuime Peter and others put into the development of this pulley.

Are you sure that the owner of LDG said that?

pberry is right, pulley misalignment will cause shredded belts, oversize crank pulleys will not.

Maybe you should consult other sources about future mods.

Wrong forum but we have sold a few hundred of the 2% pulleys with not one reported " shredded " belt . Curious indeed.

I agree with pberry51mini, so make sure you use locktite and torque that bolt down to spec, otherwise the bolt will back out, the pulley with become misaligned and you'll repeat my $300.00 mistake...

that sounds like a bit of BS tbh. Why would a larger crank pulley shred a belt? If anything, a small SC pulley would cause a belt to shred at high rpm (thus high amount of heat generated)

Was that directed at me? what i meant was that those are the things one should make sure to do if they decide to go with a 2% crank, like myself. With my first crank pulley I forgot to use locktite/torque it down and it was a catastrophe...The bolt came out, pulley backed off the crankshaft, became misaligned and tore my new gatorback to shreds.....it wasnt my brightest moment

Now with my 2nd crank pulley, no problems at all to report, been on now for 2000 miles...

I have both the 15% SC pulley with the M7 2% crank pulley.
It has been on for 18k miles. No issues to date.
I do plan to change the belt at 20K as a preventive measure.

Hope this helps

Chad,
What belt are you using, and do you change it often? May I assume you're running an SC pulley as well?

Yeah, i have a 15% SC Pulley. right now i am running a Gates Belt. i ran a NAPA belt for a short time. it was looking strange, so i took it off. it was like a noddle, very sloppy. ii do not sell or use NAPA belts anymore. have had good luck with the gates belt, and the gator back belts. i don't really change them at a mile mark or anything. i did add a new one in May when i changed the broken tensioner, but it was just because i was on the way to the dragon and i had a belt and it was easy at that time. the belt i took off looked fine. the best thing is to look at it from time to time. hope that helps. feel free to give me a call if you have any other questions.

Sorry etalj, hope i didnt come across mean or anything, im still trying to get use to this posting thing... How funny, im in IT and this is my first forum!

heres a question for all. after i removed my first crank pulley, seemed like there was a tiny bit (i mean very minimal) of scoring on the crankshaft? Normal? Or because the pulley backed out? I figure its because it backed out. Is this something i should worry about now that i got my m7 2% on?

This thread got me to thinking (trouble usually) and I rechecked my belt (only about 4 months old NAPA belt) and it still looks as good as new.

I do think that next time I'm looking around that end of the engine I will change to a Gatorback belt since so many have sung their praises recently.

I still can't imagine how a Pulley change could start shredding belts unless it was improperly installed, in which case you have a few more woes than just your belt before you.

I would suggest getting in there and checking alignment with a straight edge as soon as possible.

BTW - it bugs me at times when stupid remarks from some Vendors seek to simply cut down other Vendor's products without doing any research of their own, and really just trying to lay out their propaganda for their own products. Very few Vendors actually build their own products and do the research behind what they sell. When Lucky Dog Garage starts manufacturing their own innovative products and can back up their remarks wit research, then we should start listening to them.

My $.02.

Paul
