True or False?

I just had a 17% pulley installed with a new belt that squeals.

Only squeals on cold starts, and gets louder as I rev the engine or driving in gear. Goes away after warm up.

The installer says that's normal for the first little while and that it should go away.
Is this true? Or is he just brushing me off untill next week.

TIA

Did you have a CAI installed also? Any chance the belt is slipping?

I didn't have that problem...Like mdsbrain said, did you get a shorter belt installed, or the OEM length? Is it slipping?

Can you see any holes in the tab that sticks out of tensioner spring? If not your belt is slipping.

My 17% pulley and new (shorter) belt has never squeeked. I suspect yours needs adjustment or perhaps you need a shorter one.

Since when are squeals considered normal coming from a pulley or anything that has a rubber belt?

Sometimes a new belt is needed with a 15% pulley...

I am going with true - your belt is slipping

That sounds like a quick answer from an installer that doesn't want to deal with it.

Thanks for the replies

I think you're all right and the belt is probably slipping.
I'm going to head back there tomorrow.

Thanks.

Your belts loose dude and this make me wonder if the person who did the job knows what they are doing.

Are you thinking a CAI has anything to do with a loose belt?

In the days of yesteryear, when belts often ONLY drove accessories on a V8, a belt sqeak might indicate the need for some "belt dressing", which would lubricate the belt and often make the noise go away.

But the alignment and tension on our serpentine belts is pretty critical. Owners whose belts and pulleys have self-destructed have often said their belt was squeaking before their crank pulley came apart. At best, the noise might indicate the belt will not wear properly and therefore not be likely to last for its normal service life. I would at least get a qualified second opinion. I think slipping and/or misalignment can cause more serious problems in our cars.

Also, unless your pulley install was of an Alta, or another brand that "self-aligns," then I think the newly installed pulley can be out of alignment. I believe that with some SC pulley designs one of the difficulties of installation is possible misalignment. Maybe you should also contact the maker of the pulley to see if the noise is a symptom of that?

The instructions that came with my (Alta 15%) SC pulley said to change out the belt if it was >30K miles in service. Even if you could have re-used the old belt for its length, perhaps it should have been changed out if it is older (assuming it was not -- your first post did not indicate). Again, the pulley maker or seller might answer that question more certainly than I.

Lastly, from all I have read, a 17% reduction pulley, all other things being equal, REQUIRES a shorter belt.

i think what mdsbrain was saying about the intake is the noise is quite different the first time you hear it. there is a little whistle and a weird sucking sound that someone might associate with another mod
