I'd get in touch with Unichip...

who knows, the upgrade cost to the plug and play may be less than you think! And if it can't be done, they'll have the install info for you. I think UniChip USA is in portland.... (OR note Maine..)

Aren't there connectors on the wires?

There were on Gary's car....

but still, I'd go to UniChip for the help. They have the information, and if you need to add a connector or two, they will have them as well.

Btw...

there's a UniChip install article in the latest MC Squared. But I don't think it has the level of detail you're looking for.

Matt

ps, another place to try is WMS. Randy (and co. now) have been selling them for longer than anyone I"m aware of....

I bought mine used as well and really it is a cinch to put it in. Link below will take you to one of my photo albums where I have shots of the process. Shots 35-43 are of the Unichip install. (feel free to check out the other albums too since I get carried away with shots while doing my mods) type in tl4x40 for an album search and it will show you all of mine....

Had mine dialed in by a local Unichip tuner and cannot tell you how happy I am with the results. Too bad you are a bit far north of me or I would lend a hand. Lemme know if I can help...

Really, this is the key to owning and actually benefiting from a Unichip install - custom tuning. I believe most new owners of a Unichip don't factor (I didn't either) the added expense, above the $800 cost of the unit, to have some "Sparky" do the electro-massage to your Unichip. I hear that there are some cars that will benefit from one of the "canned" maps that Unichip and their dealers have, it depends on the number of mods you have.

The unit I purchased from WMS now appears to be defective on several fronts and has been returned to Unichip where they plan on replacing it. Unichip, as a company, has proven to be very easy to work with and concerned about the quality of their product. The fellows at BMWNA were astonished by the error codes the Unichip was producing on my MNI.

Anywho, when I get it back I plan on traveling up to the Bay area where there resides a Custom tuner for about $300-$400.

Not a cheap MOD by any means. Hope it eventually becomes a good MOD.

nypepper,

I have an older unit. When I get home tonight I'll see if I still have the installation instruction sheet. PM me with a fax number and if I have the sheet, I'll send you a fax tomorrow.

Glad things worked out for you. Drive it about a month while you shop custom tuners. It is not just a one shot thing with the A/F ratios. They can tune them for different rpm ranges etc. My 28 - 32k stumle-flat spot that the car had since new is GONE. Had no idea just how smooth and strong my car could be made to run. And I am still out less than 200 for the dyno and tuning

Newbie and curious about unichip here, so is it right that even you get the exact setup as one of those pre-programmed unichip (e.g. 15% pulley + alta intake + miltek cat back) you still need to find a local tuner to tune it? It is not like out of the box plug and play?

Also, after installed the unichip, is super unlead 91 still what you should put, or required even higher grade type of gas?

Trying to learn here.

Many of the MINI mods people typically do are covered by the several pre-canned maps they have, you just need to call them or a dealer and discuss what you have witgh them. Checking the websita also will tell you much.

No, custom tuning is not always necessary. Typically they install two maps on your unichip that can each be chosen by flipping a switch. One map is designed for 91 octane and the other for 93 if you can find it. Again, they can change your octane choices as well, but typically them lower is whatever your local premium gas octane is.

Stick with premium gas - its one of the best choices you can make for your Mini.

Happy motoring,
paul

You will get pretty close with the plug and play for sure. But I think you would have to be pretty lucky to get it dead on the max potential. I was totally happy with mine until I had gone a few steps beyond the box maps and started checking into sending it back for an upgrade and got lucky on a quality local Unichip tuner.
Still very happy I opted to do the upgrade local and get it fine tuned. Just consider it another mod! LOL See, you already have an excuse to turn one mod into two!

93 is all I run in anything I own, so that is not even a question for me. Extra performance is worth it even in the mower! LOL
