DIY- crank pulley install

OK I have searched hi and low but can't seem to find an in depth crank pulley install how-to. Most of what i've found is sketchy at best. My main concern is the actual pulley removal and install. From those who have actually done it, did you use self engineered tools to get the pulley off. And if you used actual mini pulley removal tool what exactly does this tool do. If the new pulley is a press fit would the "heat the new pulley to expand the shaft hole" work or help? Is there a thread that i missed that has the info, i have read the threads on Webb but it doesnt quite get to the issues I want answers for. Pilo and Webb have said they would post an How-To but so far I don't think it has happened. Any help would be a big HELP. Thax Jim

The reason there isnt an indepth how to is because its to simple. I haven't done it, and can't seem to find any install info, but it takes Randy Webb less than 1/2 an hour.

Some one here 'll know.

i was hoping to have a response from someone who actually did the the job. Randy does most things 4 times faster than a backyard mechanic. he also has all the tools which is the point of the 1st post. Perhaps someone could post who is not just posting in order to get to 6th gear

I found this posting on the Webb Motorsports Forum. There's a few typos and some bad grammar but it might be helpful:
Take off the right front tyre and the inner fender. Be carful not to pull off the side molding when you do. I used a standard universal puller. To get the bolt off the crank you're going to have to use an impact wrench becasue you won't have the BMW tool that keeps the crank from rotating. Once you get the bolt and belt off (I assume you have the special tool to take tension off the belt) you're going to need some bolts. Use 3 6mmx1.0 pitch bolts about 80mm long to attatch the puller to the old pulley. You're also going to need a bolt 12mmx1.75 pitch (check that once you get the old bolt out) that's about 55mm long. Most cranks have a tappered end with a keyway to line up the pulley. With that type of crank the end is exposed for the center bolt of the puller to use as leverage. BMW uses a crank with a press fit pulley so the end of the crack is covered by the pulley. In order to get something for the center bolt of the puller to rest against you are going to have to use a bolt that is tredded into the crank. This is another special BMW tool that we don't have. Use that 12 mm bolt for that purpose. It's not easy, but you should see steady movement of the old pulley as you tightedn the center bolt of your puller. If you don't, then STOP because you have something lined up wrong. Once you get the old pulley off, heat the new pulley in 350 oven for about 15 min. Once heated, the pulley will slid on the crank. Make sure it goes all the way on then put everything back together. It's really not that bad if you don't hurry and pay attention to where things line up. Let me know if you have any more questions once you read this over.

DIY-crank pulley install

Thanks neil,
Thats helpful knowing the bolt sizes, anyone here do it and run into unexpected problems or use another method to get the mounting bolt off? Seems like guys have been doing this mod for awhile now, any experienced input can save all of us who are soon to do this mod a headache or busted knuckle. Does the crank pulley pull off easier than the supercharger pulley.

I also found this installation instruction set from Unorthodox Racing

[Just in case you're wondering, I'm planning my own install, too, and am sharing what I have found so far]

I think that you will find a lot of people had the mod done by someone else. I noticed quite a number of people doing it while getting other mods done at the Dragon because it is easier when parts are already off the car.

I watched Chad (Detroit Tuned) do a few and it did not seem like a very time-consuming or difficult process. The SC pulley is defintely a little more challenging in that you are lifting the engine and loosening so much stuff.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. I would love to get a first hand account of the "backyard mechanic" version as this is something I have thought about doing but pullies freak me out now after the experience I had with a DIY SC pully (it was about an 8 hour install and not fun).

Soooo sorry,
Must have missed the help part, i have done every mod to my car in the driveway, but telling me a pro does this particular mod in a half hour wasn't what I was looking for in the way of help. Now if you had done the mod yourself and wanted to reassure me thats different. Perhaps you have read Randy's description of how to install the 15% sc pulley (extremely helpful)
Thats kinda what I was after, apparently we are not that far along with the crank pulley. telling me "its simple" from a person who hasn't done it ,not so much

Well I did it myself, and it was not all that easy but it wasn't that hard. I'm not a professional wrench guy and I found some help from a local shop with some guidance at one point.
Take it slow, get yourself a Factory Manual and carefully heat your new crank pulley in an oven at about 200F or 150F to help installation.
A harmonic balancer puller can usually be rented locally, if not they are not that expensive at the local Pep Boys.
I had a friend step on the brakes while the tranny was in 6th gear while I torqued the crank bolt on slowly with a impact wrench until it got close enough to torque with a torque wrench at the end.
You're welcome to email me if you havbe any specific questions.

Happy wrenching!

What is the purpose of this? I'm doing this mod next week and hopefully will have a how to or something up, from what I've seen and been told it doesn't seem too difficult: You remove the passenger side fender well, Take off the original pulley, heat the other in the oven at 200 degrees, slip it on and tighten it back, Return the belt, Replace the fender well, put the wheel back on, and you're off.

What do you mean? What is the purpose of stepping on the brakes while in 6th to torques the crank bolt? I don't understand your protest, if that is what it is.

I do agree, however, it is easier than most think. But not that easy.
Clear as mud.

Well, glad you asked. You need to hold the crankshaft still while torqueing the crank bolt. Your friend standing on the brakes while in gear holds the crankshaft sufficiently to torque the crank bolt.

Guess that wasn't clear earlier, or maybe you have another idea. That's what worked for me anyways.

Hve fun with your install.

I fitted a Alta crank pulley a couple of months ago and I having a problem with the crank bolt comming loose. I don't know what to do as I keep torqueing the bolt upto 85 ft lbs.

Should I replace the crank bolt with a new from Mini?
Or replaced it with a slighty longer bolt with a washer and spring washer on it?

I believe the crank bolt is a 1 time use. I won't tell you to buy a new 1, I suggest you do. It will have a locker applied.

Blue Locktite does the job.

Attached doc & pdf should help. Assisted a mechanic when my stock pulley was replaced with a GTT 3% lightweight one. Takes quite a bit of force to pull off the pulley! We used BMW tools.
