weight reduction for the Mini thread

I am begining to think about weight reduction as I am about at the limit for power...... who has done what and kept the car relatively quiet and comfortable.....I know these two forces oppose each other but what is practical for a daily driver?

Dump the rear seats, do only the backs to lessen road noise or remove everything and dynamat the bottom for some noise reduction. Lighter fixed back front seats, start removing sound deading, stereo A/C (keep it as a daily move really far north all in the name of power, besides cold air helps the powerband right?) Remove stereo system, switch to lighter wheels remove carpets.

GRM had a good expamle using a CIVIC they setup for road racing had the actual weught saved from each item removed. Remember the Lotus concept and remove what you can do without.

Weight reduction.

Start from the boot/trunk and put everything in a Staples basket/box not needed to drive to work tomorrow. Then weight it, carry it from place to place, and now you understand the objective. Scan the car twice, a day apart. This will improve your off the line boot!

Unfortunately, Colin ended up removing some things he could not do without as well

Spidey, check out this current thread: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...an+weight+loss

Also, have you seen the LSD in the classified (not for weight loss, just thought I remember you considering one)?

I have also documented my weight-loss program on Excel or Word doc (it's been a while, don't remember), and when I have some time, I'll hunt it down, and update it; and share.

As I might have shared in that above thread, I feel that I can shed 250 pounds, without the car looking gutted or unfinished. The custom exhaust is louder than stock for sure, but not overly so. Randy Webb thought that it wasn't any loulder than a Magnaflow, or even less.

My 05 MCS weighs less than 2500lbs now, without actually trying hard to lose weight. That's 150-200lb less than a showroom stocker. Of course somethings you just have to get right to start with: no sunroof. But most things I saved weight on were actual performance upgrades: lighter wheels, tires, brakes, control arms, exhaust(header and catback). I removed the rear wiper, I have no accessories. I could save more with: no rear seats, smaller battery, lose the rubber mats... I think 250lbs is totally achievable for a weight loss program.

cheers,

I'll steal Tony's thunder. He sent me a list of weight-reduction stuff last year. Being a pack rat I kept it.

Edit: sorry, all the "font" stuff showed up and made it unreadable.

Bob,

You've seen mine. I have a flat, very lightweight rear deck that goes from over the battery compartment all the way forward to the edge of the rear seat front vertcal support.

I've had it for a couple of years, before the "rear seat delete" kit came out.

Works great.

Also got the lightweight Braille battery from Eric a year so ago (unfortunately before he started carrying the same version for much less).

So although the rear of the car is not the best place to lose weight, I've taken what I can get and it's been very worthwhile.

Of course, I use lightweight 15" wheels and tires which makes another significant difference in unsprung weight as well as better gearing (although some don't like 15s visually, I've grown to prefer them).

One reason I bought the 06 version was to get the tranny and no sunroof. I've loved that decision so far.

I suppose you could have the sunroof removed and replaced with fibre glass or even a cf roof. But you'd want to replace both glass sections as well as remove the motor assembly.

For competitions or track days, I have to drive without the mats, but generally, I've put up with them for the street, to save on the carpet, as the miles pile up quickly for me.

None of this is new, but it's at least someone in your area who has dropped more than several pounds from the car.

I really should drop thirty or so from MY frame, but only have had slight luck with that so far. Shows how serious I'm NOT, I guess...

Oh, almost forgot. Next up for me is likely to be lightweight seats.

Thanks Jim,

The rear seats and the light battery save how much..... the sunroof stays......maybe a CF bonnet in the future

Honestly I never weighed them.

But I'd make a conservative estimate of perhaps 40-50 lb. savings, including the battery.

Probably more.

Front Control Arms

These look pretty sweet and save 5lbs., in the correct place, the front. I don't know of anyone who has them though:

It's a hole 5 lbs. for $800.

I think M7 used to have a CF bonnet for around $600, but you save 15lbs. in the front.

i swapped in a deka battery($90ish) and picked up a rear seat delete kit($100ish). Mine is still a daily driver, no complaints with road noise but i still have stock exhaust too..i think the weight savings were close to 60lbs(35lbs for the rear seat and about 25lbs for the battery)

That's my cheap option. Lighten the load and save money. Not many mods will do that.

You could always start doing some research on aerobatic aircraft; Swap the glass for lexan, get aluminum seats and drill holes, remove the padding, remove the window motors, CF hatch, bonnet, doors body panels

(TC- Just a thought for more HP, 500WHP is possible)
