Differences between Axles?

Hello guys, I need my axle replaced on my drivers side. The MINI dealer told me from 02-06 Mini axles are all the same.. He didnt even ask me if I had an auto or manual, He said they are the same, This is hard to believe.. Is it true? Any insight would be appreciated

According to RealOEM, the right and left have different part #'s... Also, the automatic and the manual have different part #'s

I have seen the cooper manual shafts and they looked just like my mcs shafts. I did not measure them, but why wouldn't they be the same?

I don't know this as fact, but I'm sure it is cheaper for bmw to spec the outputs of the transmissions than to 4 different style axles. That is my logic at least. Plus, why would the dealership lie to you? I'll try and dig up th e facts.

I need to replace my my axle but wanted to know if the manual and automatic are the same even they have 2 different part number. I emailed the driveshaft company and they say they only make one for manual.

I have an auto and manual set of axles sitting in my garage. I'll do my best to remember to take photos/measurements tonight.

It was very late when I took these, which is probably the reason I forgot to take a pic of the axles as a whole. I took side by sides of the drivers side axle from a 2006 Auto, and a 2003 Manual. Both the 'S' model.

What I noticed:
Auto length is about 1" longer
Hub end is the same (expected)
Transmission output end differs significantly:
  1. Different spline count
  2. Different 'seat' diameter
  3. Different shaft design
I'll try and do a side by side of the PS axle tonight...for the archives.

Hub end -DS axle. Top = 2006 auto Bottom = 2003 manual

Transmission end -DS axle Left = 2006 auto Right = 2003 manual
