I make these extensions for the Alta. Sold a few here on NAM, but not sure about how they like them. I couldn't do without mine.
I set the Alta as low as it could go, just before it scrapes the exhaust heat shield. That's how this on in the picture is set up. The extension brings the shifter up close to the wheel.

Video clip on the track, shows how well it shifts.

WOW, your a quick shifter! Seems as the Alta is smooth. Your extension moves the shiftknob to the left and up some correct?

Up for sure. And yes, I have it toward the wheel, but that is done just by twisting the Alta shifter in that direction as it has a bend in it and can swivel 360 degrees. So you can really place that shift **** wherever you like.

I have the Rogue SSK as well.. I think it's loose though, how do I check it? And I've still definitely done the dreaded 3rd to 2nd.. only I catch my mistake soon enough that the RPMs don't fly past high 7k... still scary, it's happened to me twice. But yeah, my short shifter seems very rough and as if it was loose.

Here’s a link to another short shifter discussion with a picture of my custom extension. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...t=60745&page=2
Shifting action requires only placing the shifter in the correct position instead of a forceful shove like the stock shifter. Earlier models have sloppier shifters than later versions so there was a lot of room for improvement with mine. The short shifter still hasn’t eliminated missed shifts for me only reduced the occurrence and my trouble spot has always been 5th to 6th.

The two are interrelated as a result of the varitey in aftermarket kits and methods of shortening the throw; some models seem to also reduce the hieght of the **** in acheving this, which can be prohibitive in quicker shifts. I remember reading a post a few months ago where a short throw shifter was installed but because it lowered the ****, the owner fabricated an extension and managed to keep the stock **** but had it moved up much closer to the wheel.

this has been my experience as well with B&M. Shifts to reverse,5th and sixth are noticeably harder and you really have to "want" them to happen.I'm not sure this was worth the time and energy (considering you have to drop the exhaust system to do the install and if you live in the Northeast and have salt issues, it can be a real pandora's box full of problems) Wish I had gone with a system that left the original height while providing shorter throw. Some have mentioned Whalen ***** to make the shifting easier, but quite frankly the thought of trying to deal with a metal shift **** on those subzero mornings isn't all that appealing.Having watched Randy do this install,I surely wouldn't recommend this to anyone without a lift.

You didn't hear this from me but...a very interesting new shifter design will be introduced in the near future...This is not just another shaft replacement kit...looks to be a whole new shifter assembly with exposed mechanisms and **** closer to the steering wheel...

The problem is that the TUNER croud seems to think that the way to lower a car is to cut the springs and then they shorten the shifter with hack saws.

When shifting from 5th to 6th try shifting with your hand upside down. I.E. your thumb pointing towards the shiftboot and not towards the headliner. This will eliminate your arms movement towards the left so you shouldn't mis-shift any more... Just a thought....

Yeah, that's how I do it. I've heard racers do that on any upshift to lower the chance of accidentally downshifting.

The B&M uses a stock **** right out of the box.
The Alta requires you to buy an adapter.
The Rogue one does (because it doesn't replace the shaft).

Another consideration is if decide on the B&M or Proimini kit is the exhaust system. It only clears the OE cooper, cooper s and from what I've seen on the net the Borla street exhaust. Many aftermarket including our factory JCW exhaust has a resonator directly under the shifter which will touch the deeper shifter box provided. To keep our short shifter I had a muffler shop cut out the large diam. resonator and put in a small cross-section unit. It is louder but sounds good. Now it sounds like a deeper version of the Leitriz exhaust systems on the early 80's VW Gti's if you know what that sounds like but louder

Does anybody have an opinion on the Mini-Madness short shifter? I won one at the dragon that I haven't done anything with yet. I had never planned to do this mod and I'm not mechanically inclined so I'm not going to try this myself. Is it worth paying someone to install it for me? From reading the instructions it seems fairly complicated, even though the whole thing is only a short (3-4") shaft and a few set screws.

Isn't this the way everybody shifts already? If I'm reading this right you mean to basically grab the shift **** with your hand which makes your thumb point down. The other way is with your hand palm up and thumb pointed at the ceiling? Who does that?
