Supercharge pulley problem

Hi everyone:

Since last month, my Mini tech told me that he found my MCS 's supercharge pulley is mis-align and damaging the belt, I then order a new belt and had him to fix it... But once he took off the pulley (the pulley is a aftermarket 17% pulley), he found the supercharge shaft was moved or miss aligned, which cause the supercharge pulley mis-align with the other pulleys.

May I ask if anyone had the same issue before? If yes, is there any way to fix?

Thanks a lot

I suppose that if you (or the mechanic) mis-aligned the pulley removal tool when the stock pulley was being removed that the lateral forces could bend the shaft, although it should be a rare occurance with if you use the proper tools. I haven't heard of it happening before.

If the shaft is bent, straightening it would be very difficult, you pretty much have to remove the supercharger, at which point you might be able to fit a replacement shaft, but more than likely would just slap a new supercharger on there.

Thanks Xiangi, true that it seems now I will need to start looking for an used supercharger... :( Or I may need to change the belt once a year..

It sounds like it may have been damaged during the install. If so, the rotors will eventually machine themselves. The only way this could have happened is if the shaft was pressed or hit to put the new pulley on.

What type of pulley was used?

Thanks for your information Brian. This is a Helix 17% pulley and I remember the installer did hammer the pulley by pushing in the pulley... Which may cause the problem?

Thanks a lot.

That is definitely the issue. When he used the hammer (ouch!) he displaced the shaft. That will not only cause an issue with the belt, but it will cause a faliure in the supercharger as well. With teh Helix pulley, there is no reason at all to use a hammer, so I'm not sure why that happened.

I would ask the shop if they could locate a used supercharger for you and reinstall it.

Hope that helps!
Randy

Thanks a lot Randy, it is hard to swallow the truth though.

I will check if I can find an used supercharger then.

Thanks so much.

... never go back to that installer with the Hammer. Even if you've chosen a pulley to shrink to the shaft, simply heat it up to about 250°C (like I did with my GTT pulley), it moves on easily, hold it in right position for a few seconds and shrinks to the shaft on its own.

Thanks! For sure I will never go back to that installer but on the other hand, I won't blame him since it is his first time to work with a Mini Cooper S.

Thanks so much for the information, I feel glad to be a Mini owner since we always get helps from each others.

Cheers,
Kent

I kno this thread has died out by now, but I just got my 15% pulley and we hadda use a lil force to get the pulley off in the end and now u have me worried!! I mean wudnt u have heard the SC blades malfunctioning if the shaft were slightly misaligned as soon as you started it up? Also, just wondering how long it took till u realized that the belt was getting destroyed...Thanx for the info!
