Drivetrain ALTA CAI, how loud is loud?
Is this the LOUD thread?
How loud is loud? Without a pulley mod any CAI is a little louder than stock. If the firewall section is removed, it's a little louder, ad a pulley, a little louder, but loud is the wrong word. Some people may find the sound irrateting but it is not loud. IMHO the M7 is just about right.
On a 2 cycle the intake can be loud ( not real loud ). When my son was racing shifters we had a special intake system to quiet the intake ( it took almost 4hp away at the wheel ). With 20 125's running you can hear the intake clearly with a preformance filter ( almost as loud as the exhaust ), not so with the RLV unit we had to use. In this case we are not in the same league, you will hear the intake when you stick your foot in it otherwise it goes unnoticed.
By the way...Anybody interested in a shifter kart?? or 2, or 3?? Have lots of spares, tires, rims, rains.... Loud filters, pipes, mufflers.........

Loud enough, but only when you step on it...
I just had an Alta CAI, an Alta 15% reduction pulley and a 1-ball done early last week (at Steves in North Hills, southern California) and have been learning how to drive again since then. At first I was struck with how loud the CAI/SC was, by now it is either going softer or I'm learning how to handle it better...
There are enough more ponies now that around town I don't often have to push above between 2500 and 3500 rpm, as such I don't get far into the real whine of the CAI/SC unless I get enthusiastic. Then is plenty loud, much like a living jet engine that breathes and sighs. I actually have found myself kicking it every once in a while just to make sure other motorists are aware I'm around and don't do stupid things (back to my Harley days).
The 1-ball is a blast, too, although the volume of the CAI/SC whine overpowers it if I step on it. In the lower rpms the 1-ball is much sassier than stock, throaty but still muted, and when you shift down to 3rd, 2nd and 1st the burble is much more pronounced and noticable.
I'd recommend the Alta CAI any time, but I'd also recommend it along with a 15% reduction pulley (and colder plugs) and a less restrictive exaust (like the 1-ball) at the same time. It is all about breathing, it makes the car perform not just better, but more efficiently. I actually get better gas milage now because I don't have to step on it as much or as hard...
The sound effects are just icing on the cake.
Btw, don't be intimidated about reports of needs to do breaks, wheels, tires and suspension if you go with performance mods like the CAI/pulley/exaust... Having more ponies doesn't necessarily mean you have to go faster, but you'll definately get fast more quickly.
