I love the sound
Thanks a lot for the clip!. It makes me ponder two questions. First, if I'm bone stock except for the Alta CAI it won't whine that much correct? And I notice in the clip towards the end you let off and the whine fades, if you kept going to cruise around 2800-3000 rpms going 80 mph would the whine still be as pronounced?

Ideally I'm looking to whine it up as you do in the beginning, but cruise somewhat quieter. As much as I love that sound too, 40 minutes trip one way in the morning would get

Nope the wine disappears once you get off the boost and start to cruise.

IMHO, that is a pretty good clip of what it sounds like.

When I put mine on my car & took my wife for a ride, she asked what that radio static was coming from. We were just driving around abit, not really beating on it.

she doesn't care for it either - but she has her own MINI!

I took the car to the actual dealership for it's first oil change. (the CAI was put on at a local mini specialist, non-dealership). I took the service writer for a drive and located the noise I was talking about. He gave the car to the tech and guess what! The other place put the thing on without one of the hoses and that's why the horrible noise. They put a stock one back on and what a difference. I have to order the $38 part that was missing from the front grill to the lower section of the CAI that was creating a wierd noise.

It's like having my Mini back! I was just playing my radio louder. Now, I have options. Yeah, very excited.

I wanted a Dinan or JCW box, but the auto doesn't have that option according to the service writer. So, I'll plop a K&N in for now and be patient for a Dinan or JCW to exist.

Ahh yes the 2nd nipple for the MCSa intake. Amazed it made a difference in noise. The difference was probably the larger aftermarket, less restrictive hose.

Can't say for the Dinan, but the JCW CAI works fine in our 05 MCS auto.

I had an SRT 4 and loved the sound of the extra air
no kidding...
mine use to sound like a WHOOOoooosh...on my old SRT4, not a whine, but then again, there was a turbo in there not a SC.
You should hear what my 450hp turbo Miata 10" intake sound like, LOL...it ain't pretty.

Same for the Dinan (working fine on an MCSa).

You could try the Ultrik/K&N CAI

I don't know if it's as good as the Alta, but I have the Ultrik CAI for my 05 MCS from Minimania and it's pretty responsive without really changing the sound of the intake. I barely noticed a difference in the sound at all. I've had it for about a year now and I really like it. If you don't want to go back to stock, you could try it.

I also just had Eric at Helix do a 15% pulley for me last week and the car now runs like it should have from the factory. Next is the software upgrade and Millitek exhaust.

15% pulley, JCW intake and exhaust, sounds good. Not too loud.
First installed, the exhaust is very quiet, almost too quiet. After 2k miles, it's a bit louder. I love the combination.

Reinstall that plastic thing that does not allow the alta intake to get air from the air vent near the windsheild, and you should hear nothing.I did the same with mine as i hated the "screaming" of the Alta intake.Trust me you will be happy afterwads once again.

Nick, doesn't that defeat the purpose of the CAI. Why even use it .

Yes that way it does, but not 100%...more like 70%...
I also took a drill and started making holes until i get enough air from the vent and the ALTA works just fine without making that screaming.you can still hear but it's a distictive tone..Just love it..

When did you install the JCW exhaust? Recently, with crushed piping to allow for clearance with the Cabrio? Or, before the change to the crushed piping?

I just installed the Dinan intake and an Alta hose on my MCSCa last night - works like a charm - it ROX!

Pretty quiet except at WOT - then it howls!

Does whistle a bit...

I actually ran it with just the Alta hose and stock airbox and filter for an hour or so before putting the Dinan on - I was surprised at how much JUST the Alta hose changes the sound. SC went from silent to audible. But then adding the Dinan with the cowl opening makes the car a beast in comparison.

Definitely more throttle response now and noticeably more pull.

Can't wait for the pulley.

Christmas brought me a DDM CAI/with ALTA hose,WAY MOTORWORKS 17% pulley and tomorrow my Milltek goes on. I really like the sound that the DDM makes when you get on it and when at cruzing speed there is no difference then when it was stock. I had done the one ball exhaust three weeks ago and it made the whole system sound a lot better. Can't wait to hear the Milltek. FYI, to take away the whistle just trim the rubber residue from inside the ALTA hose. Takes away almost all of that whistle.

Now you know why Mini adopted the JCW intake. It's as quiet as stock when driven normally.. Put your foot in it and bring the revs up past 4500 and it opens up and lets some fine whine come thru. It's a nice sweet whine.. without all the air sucking noises... very nice piece!

I went back and made the service guy ride with me. I said, this doesn't sound right. He said, oh, it's suppose to sound that way. I was expecting it to sound like it did before, just barely louder. NO!!!!! It's unappealing.

I went from absolutely loving my car to never wanting to drive it again. As I type this, my other half is driving it to figure out if there is any remedy besides going back to stock. I loved how quiet it was before and was prepared for a little more noice, but dang, this thing is horribly loud now in an awful way.

Tell me what your car sounds like after the same upgrades. I'm ready to go back to stock.

K&N Typhon CAI

I have the K&N Typhoon CAI to compliment the 15% rdu. pulley and the only noise i experience is a whistle during accerleration. I can tell a large difference in the sound of the superchrger whine during acceleration but nothing to that large of an extent. The performance difference is GREAT, and my exhaust covers a lot of the whistle/whine

Does the underdrive pulley affect gas mileage?
