You might be able to measure a 1-2 ft.-lb. difference between one CAI and another of a different brand. As to Dinan vs. Alta, probably not that much.

The Alta intake does not whine. The supercharger whines. With the Alta, it allows for more of the supercharger whine to enter the driver's cabin. It's truely a lovely sound.

I have always wondered exactly HOW loud is the Alta CAI. I've looked on NAM for clips, but to no avail. I've got a MCSa just like silver_baby and have wondered how loud adding an Alta CAI with a stock pulley would be. Coming out of toll booths I love that whine, but since I'm bone stock I rarely hear it.

Anyone know where a clip can be seen/heard? Thanks for your input!

Drew

Drew here is a video of my MCSa with the Alta CAI but I do have a 15% pulley and exhaust.

I appreciate all the positive feedback and suggestions that were made! I truly think it helped me have a better outlook towards it this morning. People always say on these threads that they love the sound but the descriptions weren't there, so I made one up in my head based on the turbo I had. I bought the right car, that I don't doubt!
A new day, a fresh outlook! Good for you, silver_baby! Give your new mods a chance. You will find that on the highways, you will love that whine when it comes time to passing vehicles! BTW, I think of the supercharger whine as sounding like a dolphin! Maybe that will help you hear it in a more pleasing way!

A dolphin...okay, I might be able to work with that! Love this forum. I find I spend almost as much time reading here as I do driving the car.

Had the car since Jan 06 and already have 3500 miles. Taking it up to Reno next week if weather allows. She's my birthday present and we are going on a birthday getaway.

...like a dolphin...

HA - personally I think it sounds more like the sound of unlubricated gears grinding themselves to metal dust...

Let me clarify... The Alta put out more power than the Dinan.... the Alta is much louder...drown out the Milltek exhaust......I really like the WMS HDI.... the power is there and I can hear the exhaust nicely balanced with the SC.... I think if I still had the Alta, I would buy the cover and get pretty close to the same effect....... The HDI was worked on extensively by some pretty smart people..... and works very well IMO

Sorry to disagree but your description of the Dinan is that of the JCW intake. The Dinan is a mostly enclosed box that uses the stock intake path plus an opening into the cowl area at the rear of the airbox for cold air. There is no butterfly trap that opens at any RPM. I have the Dinan on my '05 and love it - just enough aural pleasure when I jump on it. I test drove a couple of other MINIs with Alta but it was a little much (for me).

In terms of loudness, are the intakes ranked, AGS, HAI, all the rest?

You Sir are Correct! My Bad, Mea Culpa. Luckily I still have time to join the flagellents for the Good Friday procession at my church.

My local MINI dealer sells both JCW and Dinan products and when I was there a couple of weeks ago I got a sales pitch on both of 'em. Musta gotten confused somewhere along the line.

Logic would tell me that AGS would be the loudest to the outside world as the sound is projected out the filter which is clearly visible in this image. On the inside, it's a bit quieter than the Alta due to the source of the sound.

I went back and made the service guy ride with me. I said, this doesn't sound right. He said, oh, it's suppose to sound that way. I was expecting it to sound like it did before, just barely louder. NO!!!!! It's unappealing.

I went from absolutely loving my car to never wanting to drive it again. As I type this, my other half is driving it to figure out if there is any remedy besides going back to stock. I loved how quiet it was before and was prepared for a little more noice, but dang, this thing is horribly loud now in an awful way.

Tell me what your car sounds like after the same upgrades. I'm ready to go back to stock.

I love my Madness CAI with cowl mod and SC setup. When in the higher power range under hard acceleration you can hear the sucking and whining........scares small dogs, children, and old ladies....

Actually, 4500 rpm, but what's 500 rpm among the faithful.

Only problem is now I wait for the whine, wait a bit more, shift, and then watch my gas mileage go in the crapper.

"Refined" as Michael Cooper wanted it to be and only louder when need be. Elegance rather than raw noise.
