What is the best mod for more torque and low end power? I don't like the stability issues with more HP at 6500RPMs the car gets really squirly.

I'm guessing Randy will say pulley; and maybe chip (if its the right chip).

Most of the mods improve air flow into or out of the engine, which provides gains mostly at higher RPMs. The 15% overdrive pulley, however, brings on the boost sooner, therefore improving midrange power/torque as well as the upper end.

Cheers,

James

If you do not want to be very intrusive than you may want to just install a new intake and see if that helps.

THe intake should help a bit. I'll hopefully check it out this weekend although it's supposed to rain here so I don't know. But I should receive my Madness intake from Randy on Friday.

James is right, though. I don't think ANY mod will come close to the supercharger pulley reduction. It's only a $200 part from Randy and maybe a $300 install tops. This not only gives more overall boost but gives more boost at lower RPMs - exactly what you're looking for. It also adds up to 15 HP AND 15 TORQUE which is unheard of in my book! From the dyno charts I've seen, it'll make your S pull from 2400 RPMs like it does now at 3000 RPMs. Max torque may also be lowered slightly to 3750 RPM according to one dyno chart. So this would be what you're looking for. It probably will be my next mod after the air intake.

itsthe dirtybird,

Greatgro kinda answered already, but I didn't want to leave you hanging!

I've actually seen pretty linear gains from the intake adn exhaust combo - there doesn't seem to be much of a shift up in the RPM range, just a shift up on the hp torque axis.

That said, the pulley mod is definitely the torque mod. The S/C is pruducing more boost at a lower RPM, so the available hp and torque is increased as well as moved lower on the RPM range axis.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Randy

What kind of long term testing has been done with this mod (pulley)? Of course any engine mod could and probably would make it less reliable in the longrun. But this seems to be a pretty intense modification to the amount of forced induction at lower rpm's.

The pulley is the best mod I have done, by far. This is bone stock compared with bone stock plus the pulley:

Considering that the John Cooper Works upgrade will be offering a similar pulley reduction - and that BMW will be backing the full warranty with those mods, it should be ok. My guess is that BMW and JCW had this planned during design, not after production.
