I would upgrade the spark plugs first. The coilpack makes a small difference. I would recommend going with the Pilo which has the correct bolt size if you want to upgrade the coilpack.

Hope that helps!

I wouldn't recomend you waste your time or money on an ignition upgrade with those mods. I had the Pilo ignition upgrade (took it out). I had Denso Iridium IK22 plugs (took them out). I have Nology HotWire plug wires. None of them made any noticeable improvement. Save the money and put it into something like an MTH ECU upgrade or a catback exhaust.

Curious as to why you pulled the plugs? I have had great luck with them. The MTH on the other hand...

I disagree with sumwon... I noticed a difference with Denso Ik22's and good plug wires alone on my ride, and am considering the pilo coil pack to round it out. In every vehicle I've ever owned, upgrading the ignition components has made a difference in a little power, throttle response, and mileage. IK22's are just make good sense with the extra boost that pulley is making besides.

My 2 cents anyhow... since you asked.

To each their own. The person asked for advice and my experience has been that the MINI ignition upgrades mentioned provided marginal (at best) increases of any measure (HP, fuel consumption, "smoothness", "response") as compared to other performance upgrades. I am not saying they are bad products, just that dollar for dollar I think there are much better ways to get bang for your buck. I have been very happy with my 15% pulley, CAI, exhaust, and MTH. All have provided very noticeable gains individually and in combination work very well.

Its your dime, spend it as you will. Just giving my opinion from my experience.

I think Randy inquired as to why because a lot of people believe that when you change the pulley it is a good idea to change to a colder range plug. I am not sure as to the exact reasons why, but I am sure somebody else could fill in where I leave off.

randy - how would u rate the msd coil pack?

smaller pully - more boost - more heat = need for colder plugs?

The MSD doesn't fit the OEM bolts, so I'm not a big fan. It also produces less voltage than the Screamin' Demon or Pilo (but we are talking minimal differences).

More boost = higher inlet air temp = colder heat range plug (just like the JCW, though we were doing before that).

SumWon,

Please don't take my post the wrong way - I was sincerely curious as to why you pulled the items off the car - issues? I just want to stay right on top of our product offerings, and if there are any known issues with them.

Thanks!
Randy

forgot to state that i have Denso Iridium IK22 plugs. i did it with the pulley, so i cant tell you if there was a difference. But from the people around here it was a good move. So i guess that it wont be a 79 wasted from what i here. Only one person stated that there was no difference.. anyone else chime in.
thanks.

Sorry if I came off touchy. Late at night.

There were issues with the Pilo ignition upgrade. I attempted to resolve them with Dan, but suffice it to say I will no longer buy Pilo products. I pulled the coil and the wires off of the car and replaced the Acel plugs with the Denso plugs. The Denso plugs worked fine, nothing earth shattering there, but they are just plugs. They worked as well as the OEM plugs and the Acel plugs that come with the Pilo upgrade. The Nology Hotwires again have had no problems. They too work as well as the OEM wires and the Crane wires that come with the Pilo upgrade.

The original JCW kit did not come with any upgraded ignition parts and there were many cars that left the floor and run hard that way. I wouldn't use the JCW products as the ultimate test (as they do sell some products simply because the market demands, not because they were needed), but JCW and MINI did enough testing to feel comfortable backing the gains with a warentee. My personally experience with the MINI and other performance vehicles showed me that the MINI does not require or benefit significantly from ignition upgrades at the level mentioned in the original post. Starting to looking at NOS, +20lbs of boost, twincharge, or even extended race conditions (not AutoX)? Then yes, but you better not stop with just ignition.

The opinion of a guy who sells nothing and has been down this road? You already have the CAI, the pulley, and colder plugs. For the best fun for the dollar I would drop those Slites and runflats that you have in your sig picture and get a nice set of light after market rims and tires. Then I would go for a catback, ECU upgrade, or rear swaybar. Heck, its only money, why not get them all?
