lifter noise

55,000 miles and i have what i think is lifter noise. i have an appointment to take it in. the mechanic (sy at unversal mini here in los angeles) says it could be the tensioner for the timing chain, the timing chain or lifters. he has ordered lifters for me. thankfully i have an extended warranty.

anyone else out there experienced the dreaded tick tick tick???

I have had lifter tick since the beginning. Or maybe it was the lack of tranny oil in the case when I drained it @ 40,000 miles!

lifter tick

so sorry to hear about the loss of tranny oil!!

did you check out the lifter tick? i don't think it should be there even when i am told that its 'normal'....

and i did not have it from the beginning. i first noticed it around 7,000 miles ago, was told it was normal for alot of minis, and now i'm really addressing it.

When did you first begin to think you heard the ticking? How loud is now - equiv or worse?

Not to hijack, but was the tranny completely dry or just very low? Seems like a worthy thread of its own. Care to post it in beneath the bonnet?

lifter tick

i first noticed it at about 47,000. i asked steve (steve's auto clinic) about it and he said that 'they all have it', meaning most minis are rough sounding. i didn't and don't agree, having heard many engines without the 'ticking'. it has become increasingly more noticeable and now i am pushing to have it investigated. fortunately i do have an extended warranty and steve has a good relationship with the service manager at universal mini. he ordered lifter for me and will look at the timing chain and tensioner as well as he is not sure its the lifters.
i'm really hoping i can get it resolved easily and quickly. i want to go on a road trip but am loathe to jepardize myself or the motor...

tomorrow i am taking my mcs in to have the tick tick diagnosed. possibilities according to the technician i spoke with are: lifters, timing chain, timing chain tensioner or restrictor.
i will post when i find out what's happening. for those who care...

yeah please do, i care as i think mine is making the same noise come to think of it. I have had a few tick ticks but the ticking part is always replaced by mini, so i hope to address another tick tick to them depending on how yours goes and what they notice. how could you tell if those parts are bad? never messed with them b4 so i have no idea what to look for if i pop my head under

not lifters

ok so the latest news from universal mini on the noise is this:
lifters appear to be fine. they are telling me that my camshaft is worn...
i have no idea how this could be it other than a weak or flat spot that came with the shaft. i don't race so its not from being driven hard.
more later...
they still have my car!!!! :impatient

camshaft woes

here is the latest update. today i went over to universal mini to have them fax my service records to hendrick autoguard, the company i have my extended (80,000 miles) warranty with. they have so far approved replacing the faulty (scored and chipped) camshaft, as long as they see that the car has been serviced, but are at this point approved replacing the rocker arms (and lifters) with the new camshaft. at least one of the lifters is messed up and of course anyone knowledgeable would replace the rockers with a new camshaft.

will keep you all updated. you will at the very least be informed of the policies of hendrick autoguard for future consideration when thinking of an extended warranty. sigh... if only mini had offered this when i purchased the car...

it is now a week without the beloved skippy. but more than that getting around los angeles without a car is a daily challenge...

time to get out the bicycle...

I'm happy to hear it looks like the "political" work on your car is progressing well.
Thanks for the update. Wishing you the best.

after more than a week of talking between the warranty/insurance company, universal mini and mini of charleston where i purchased the car a resolution has been made. bmw/mini and the hendrick group extended warranty company will share the costs of replacing the camshaft, rocker arms and lifters.
i should have the car by tuesday. kind of like having a new motor???
anyway it was a hassle and i'm grateful that it is being dealt with fairly but i wasn't sure for a few days.
the hendrick group felt that mini was responsible for installing a faulty part and not detecting it within the 50,000 mile warranty that comes with the car. i agree, i have mentioned it a few times and been told that they can't find anything.
so its important to be persistent and vigilent and keep your service records!!! :impatient

update and recap

hey everyone,

finally picked up my mcs yesterday from universal mini after another two week delay. the camshaft had to be sent from england.

25 days to replace the camshaft and lifters using an extended warranty. i suspect that mini installed a bad lifter resulting in a chipped and scored camshaft. the delay appears to be political; negotiations between mini of charleston where i purchased the car and the extended warranty company and bmw/mini.
thankfully universal mini paid for a rental car as the hendrick group warranty only covers 5 days.

my advice to anyone having this sort of situation is to be patient, tenaous, and figure out who to talk to. the key phone call in my case was to mini of charleston. the sales manager, tim miller, stepped in and facilitated the negotiations between hendrick autoguard and mini. and then telling universal i would consider buying a car from them helped too...

and don't take no for an answer. everyone kept saying how unusual this was and of course mini couldn't possibly have installed faulty parts.

500 miles of break in....

warranty

hey pooch...

the warranty i bought from hendrick autoguard (incidently they are the same hendrick auto group that owns mini of charleston in south carolina and mini in pleasanton in northern california. they are very active in the racing world) is for 80,000 miles with a $50 deductible. it cost $1380. universal mini ignored my stage 1 modifications thankfully. the cost of this repair was $2200. plus the rental car (probably around $600)

how much is the mini warranty? it was not available when i purchased my car.

Hendrick Extended Warranty

When did you purchase the Hendrick Extended Warrantee?
Was the $2200 cost for repair covered by Hendrick?
Does anyone know how Western General Ins Extended Warrantee compare to Hendrick Autoguard Extended Warrantee?
