Hi guys,
Been lurking for sometime. Excellent news forum by the way, I really appreciate the exchanges among you all.
Here's one for you. Does anyone know/has anyone done a side by side oil comparison? Royal Purple is supposedly capable of adding a few horsepower by simply using it. Not sure how this compares to Amsoil, if this is true, nor which one would provide the best performance bang per buck.
Any ideas?

Cheers,
MinMax

WELCOME MiniMax!

I have heard similar claims from Redline and Amsoil. I like Redline the best, but honestly that is mostly because of brand loyalty. We have had very good oil analysis from Redline, and after taking apart race motors that use nothing else, the wear is very impressive. We used Castrol and Mobil1 and there was a noticable difference in the internals when we switched.

There is a Sponsor here on MCO that could probably anwer your questions about Amsoil. Check out the sponsor directory and look for Synthetic Warehouse.

Hope that helps!

For street driving I wouldn't use a racing oil. I'd stick with
Mobil One or Amsoil. A racing oil won't have the detergent
properties you'd want in an everyday oil.
I'd ask the Syn. Warehouse for his opinion as well.
I wouldn't use the Castrol BMW recommends.

i used mobil one loyally in my '94 Sentra SE-R from about 45k to the day she died at 140k and i still had the original internals never needed anything rebuilt ever and i would get my oil changes every 5000 miles rather than 3000 (mechanic recommendation) car seemed to run smooth as silk always never overheated. like Randy said its more about brand loyalty i like to use products that have some kind of reputation with competitions or racing, Mobil 1, Redline, etc. that's just me

Klotz is the best! C'mon, don't tell me you've never heard of it?

Just when I thought I'd heard it all re: oils, I read this. Personally I've always used Mobil 1, but now I'm intrigued about Redline after reading Randy's post. (Oh, and Bruce and Suzy are one of the top four or so Ducati shops in the country. I just think saying 'Klotz' is funny.)

Hi,
I've been a dealer for Royal Purple for 8+ years now. Before that I was a loyal Mobil 1 user for about 12 years. We use the oil in Porsche 911s, but have used it in everything from Mazda rotaries to Cummins turbodiesels.. We use the pure synthetic 'HP' line for racing (both the 21 and 41) and the street oil we use is the 15w/40. I was convinced to switch when a Royal Purple rep showed up here and did the friction test demos. We tried numerous other oils, including Mobil 1, Redline, Kendall GT1 (non-synthetic), Valvoline 20w/50 (non-synthetic), CastrolGTX 15w/50 (also a non synthetic). The results were impressive. The Royal Purple reduced friction. There is more to an oil than its ability to reduce friction, but the friction tests were conclusive. We started racing with Royal Purple in 1995 and haven't stopped. My 'friction test day' was over 8 years ago. The oils have all improved and are all more than adequate. The synthetic oils are no longer that different, chemically, from non-synthetics. Mobil 1, Redline and Royal Purple would all be excellent choices in extreme high heat (turbo and race engines) applications. In our Mini Cooper S' these three are obviously all overkill. I use Royal Purple 15w/40 in my supercharged Cooper S and in my supercharged 911. It's in all of my customer's street and race cars as well. If someone walks in here bringing or requesting Mobil 1, I don't hesitate to use it.

Hi from the new guy. To clarify a couple things the Royal Purple race oild do have enough detergent/Dipersent additives to run on the street, the 21.41 ect. It's make up is PAO and some Ester with a mineral carrier base for the additive package
The Redline oil is a Penterythol base" Pe" which is of the Polyol Family. Di-Esters have been dead and gone for quite some time in most auto oils. The Mobil 1 Supersyn is a all Pao base oil with some ester to mediate seal detoriation. It uses a new advanged group of PAO's "Poly Alpha Olelins" and seems they do doeble duty as AW's and FM's,they also incorporate a dose of Molydenum Trialkydithiomate in the formulation for extra boundry lubrication. Not to be confused with Molydisulfide.

The Di-Esters were dropped by Amsoil quite some time ago" actually Sebasic Acid esters were used in the first formulations" when they became more costly and was replaced with TMP's,,they are in the Family of Polyol Esters and like the PE's are more Oxidation stable and less costly to procure from Exxon/Mobil where they buy their base fluds, their additive package comes from additive giant Lubrizol. Mobil makes all fluids and additives in house where Amsoil,Redlin,Royal Purple buys from others. Redline and Royal Purple have other Companies package and blend their formulations. There are some other Exoctics I would like to talk about later.

There is much more to this and different oil formulations and individual needs,,this is enough for now I believe until I learn of the owner manual rcommendations,it will tell me something there hopefully

Anyway I am new to the site and came to learn more about the Mini before purchasing one,,,what are the owners manuals calling for both in API specs and Viscosity for North America ? With that info I can help narrow down whats best for certain driving styles from everyday usage to weekend only to all out race and some of the inbetween

Neat site,,I hope I can be of help with your lube questions and BTW,I do not sell oil nor am I afilliated with any oil companies or blenders.

Hope to hear about the owners manual recommendations and then we can go from there

Curtis

Wow. You seem to know your oil, which brings me to a burning question. Can you explain why my old 325is (when I sold it, it had 200,000 miles) used to drink Mobil 1 like a camel: about 1 quart every 400 miles, but only burn (or consume) about 1 quart of Castrol Syntec every 3000 miles? With the Syntec I wouldn't have to top it off between oil changes. -Charlie

Charlie,to give you the best in responce I really need more information on the history of the car. Was M1 used form the git go or started pretty far into engine life? What was the wt of the Mobil and the Syntec's used ect.Driven hard on the hi-way ect. i assure you Mobil in it's self ws not the culprit here,,could have been cleaning old residual dino oil,,the use of too light a VI Mobil grade, engine had detonation problems then or in the past causing damage to the ring pack and the piston ring lands ect.So there are many variables,,,I supect too light a viscosity was used. Example would be VI is measured in centistrokes.a 30 wt coudl be from 9.3 to 12.49 ,,Mobil always was and still is on the lower side of the vi when new ,excepting the 15/50 Supersyn. Depending on the Syntec you might have been using a much higher vi even if it was a 30wt,,please get back to me on this. Oils a great topic and most don' understand it well.

I got to tell you while cruising the site I saw an alarming oil post,,carefull who you recieve information from here as most that sell oil I have ran across really do not know how to read a analyisis properly nor do they know about Tribology and basic engines. Please do not use oils based on wild claims,,,use the oils based on merits of the product itself and use some good judgment for you intervals,,,there truly are some oils out there that will slay the dragon,,heres a oil I do not use but it is the Chevron Delo 15/40,priced at 1.35 per quart used in a early 90/s BMx six for I think 7600 miles of mostly hiway.

Picking and using a oil on " Blind Faith " will get you nothing but a early retirement of your motor in some cases
