Speed limiter removal

Is there anyways to remove the Top Speed Limiter on the Mini? I realize that the MTH software can raise your Rev Limiter but can it also raise the Top speed limiter? What about other solutions? Anyone have any idea?

Thanks,
Jm

MTH is the only one that I know of that removes the Speed Limiter.

Dinan software upped the rev limits, changed the mapping and removed the speed limiter for me on a BMW, there is a good chance the software for the Mini is similar (check the website, dinancars.com).

There's a speed limiter?

I've taken my Mini a tad passed 115mph, and not noticed any type of governing.

The speed limiter kicks in somewhere north of 130mph if I remember correctly.

The speed is 'soft limited' from my experience . A little over 135 it slows fuel delivery and you're limited. I believe every software that I've seen does remove it. Mine will be doing so...

Do you think slowing fuel delivery on a mod'd MCS (running over 20+lbs of boost) would lean it out too much?

I think the speed limiter is just downright inconvenient. Having only crossed 130 twice, I dont see why its there. When you're going that fast, why kick in? Afraid of tires exploding?

Also, be aware that at top speeds the speedo is inaccurate (well, its also off at normal speeds too). It has been proven (at least in BMWs) to show speeds past the limiter that are quite wrong.

Do all MINIS have a speed limiter or just US spec cars? JCW specifications list top speed as 143mph.

I don't believe they would just cut-off fuel. I think it will give less gas and close the TB butterfly to an appropriate angle to match air mass to the fuel delivery, but I can't say for sure. It is, without a doubt, a soft limiter, though, because the engine didn't misfire or anything...the engine just wimped out a bit to the point that it remained at 135.

JCW sw is not stock MINI sw so it changes it too.

Closing the throttle body to a more appropriate angle makes more sense rather than slowing fuel delivery.

That's exactly what I hit, and was still climbing when I came back down...given the rate of climb I'd say 150 would be about my drag limit. 15%, intake, MTH tuner.

The digital (if you have the on board comp) will show the actual speed without error (what MINIusa told me). Also to get to the top speed you have to have it in fifth gear in the S. If not (this is on a track test of mine) you only get up to about 130, in sixth.

I experienced the 130 limit in 6th gear just the other day. Boy did it make it "fun" for me when the engine tried to slow it self on the straightaway...the racer behind was good enough to not rear-end me, thank goodness. We were both accellerating at a really good clip until the limiter hit at 130 when I was expecting 135. Had I known this I would have made my move to the outside to give him the racing line at 130 rather than trying to wait until 135. I didn't make that same mistake the next lap.

so there is no way to get the MCS over 135 unless you remove the limiter? I hit 132 in 5th and still had a little more to go before hitting rev limiter. If one were to shift to 6th after hitting rev limit in 5th, the car would just kinda die until you were under 135?

not sure about either statement; both digital and analog should show the same speed, and in my car both are at least 2 mph too fast around 80 mph (radar & GPS checked). And as far as I remember I run out of rpm in 5th gear so to go faster than 130 I have to shift to 6th...

It could be worse. A speed limiter based on the maximum speed limit allowed in the state where the vehicle was purchased.

It's hard to find any straight roads here in North Georgia. About all we got are these crazy twisties which really limit us to about 90 MPH tops before we have to stand on the brakes. I guess we can't have everything

Hmm thats weird... are you shifting at redline or taking it to rev limit in 5th. I was just passed redline when i was going 132... I think the car can do 135 at rev limit/top speed limit in 5th.

Yeah here in miami theres a few highways where you can really test the car... provided theres no one in the way of course...

In many cases speed limiters arent what is hindering your top speed. Many times its the HP versus aerodynamics. I forget where it was, but i saw a test concerning the MCS saying that you would need to get more power in order to get the speed faster.
