Sold the sytem to Ramon (as he was most proactive) and a nice guy may I add.
For those who want to hear it...come to Bear Mt. tomorrow Sunday 2/9.
It's being installed on his MCS as I type

BTW all .....I actually did put 1000 miles on my MCS before I took off the magnaflow system, and IMHO it's still....LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

HI HO..... Quicksilver

Peace,
D

Anyone in Atlanta have one of these? You guys are killing me. I *have* to hear it in person.

(But I'm weird that way. I open the window to hear motorcycles pass by, chased a Dodge viper through a parking lot just to hear it for a moment longer....)

Thanks Dennis. The feeling is mutual.
I took about an hour drive home and the Magnaflow may be loud - in a good way  - but it is not LOUD.
Comparison to stock is unfair becuase stock is almost inaudible. The Magnaflow gives that low down muscular grumble. I love it. Having had a Porsche with headers/no cat, this is not quite that loud.
I found myself with my window rolled down - it's 25 degrees outside

My comments on the Magnaflow again... I like it. I also
have a Harley with the Screaming Eagle exhaust and carb
upgrade. I also used to race cars.
I now do try to remember putting in earplugs whenever I
do anything that involves noise so it is something I am used
to. I don't think I would use the Magnaflow if I had to transport
children in my car. I based my decision to get it on the dyno.
I have about 1000 miles with it and am going to measure
performance again with the G-Tech Pro and I'll post what the
change is over stock.
For comparison sake, the way I would describe the sound is that
it makes the car sound like a 4 cylinder Ferrari. Not a race prepped
Ferrari, just your run of the mill street. Idling is fine. Normal acceleration
is fine. Nail it, and like a Ferrari, it has a distinctive roar. Imagine the
Ferrai as King of the Jungle. Imagine the Mini with Magnaflow as his
cocky son.

Hey Ramon,
Glad it's all you want it to be...
Motor on dude  !!!!!!

OK...
Another 2 cents....
I must be up to a dollar by now ...lol.

I sat in my office the other day which is a corner room in my house. I asked my wife to take my MCS (against my better judgement may I add) and go onto the parkway which is approx 1& 1/2 blocks away.
Sitting at my desk I heard her go thru ... & ....up to 3rd gear.
The "loud" exists ..to ME. When you come down the block....people know it.
Loud is relative...there is no disputing that statement. We've all said that in our own different ways.
We are also....ALL correct in our personal opinions.... as regards to what is indeed "loud".

When I drive I like to hear the radio...at any volume I choose.
You can do that with the stock system, and you can't do that with the magnaflow.

The magnaflow is a good loud..I totally agree with that statement.

Here's a piece of an earlier post.... that agrees with that opinion.

<<<<PART #2: SOUND
Here is my original post on 1/25
<<-var-room....what a sound!!!!!!
incredible bassy, low end, throaty sound....& the deep gurgle just is the perfect finish.
-i was worried a bit bout the "loudness" factor, but it's well within reasonable limits. radio/conversations are ....manageable and wide open...it sings.>>

I'm doing a real flip/flop on this one...
Around town....at speeds of 0-to lets call it about 65 MPH...it's fine...
throaty,bassy, all that good stuff...
Here's the problem ....for me..... at least.
I drive about 60-70 miles per day on the parkway...at speeds in excess of 80 MPH.... It is WAY TOO LOUD.....My ears are ringing by the time I reach my office.
There is a loud drone on the parkways>>>>

All of my posts are not intended to ...limit Magnaflow sales or dissuade individulas from buying this product.

All I'm stating is MY PERSONAL: OPINION.......
which is that it's LOUD & DRONING....especially over 75 or so...on parkways

HI Ho Quicksilver....
I hope it's a good loud as well... but a softer ...mello....less droning.... loud

ROFL

Peace y'all,

D

Good question.....
I inquired with (3) independent "audio" installer types and their unanimous response was....NO.

Go figure

I agree with their opinion. I had a similar issue with a Remus exhaust on my New Beetle and I tried Dyanmat on it, lots of it, and it did not help. Dynamat mainly deals with vibrations carried in the body panels, it is not a sound proofer. Also, the low frequency drone gets through the windows, etc.

Better to find a different exhaust!

Hey Dennis,

Glad to hear the Magnaflow found a home.
Thanks for taking the time to show me you car and the differences that the modifications make. It was very nice of you to do so and I appreciate it.
Does the car still "rock" ??

Romhog,

Ihave had the Magnaflow for two weeks now. I have applied Dynamat to the hatch and the boot floor, with a loose piece covering the battery. IMHO, the difference is negligable when it comes to the 3k rpm range "drone". It is such a low tone, there is no way to quiet it much. I am going to do the area under the back seat and the doors, because I know it will help the audio, if nothing else. I bought a bunch of material, so I might as well use it. The good news is the performance. It is definitely smoother, pulls harder right up the rev range in every gear. From 3750 rpm's on up it really goes. The sound is phenomenal. It sounds something like an old Lotus europa. It isn't what I would have if I drove long distances at speed like d-mini-ero. It's that droning that is unpleasant, but thats it. I just run the revs higher in fourth or fifth gear and it's fine. Obviously thats not practical on long trips. I took my MCS over to MAG MINI and let three of the sales guys drive it just to get an opinion from people who drive stock MCS's regularly. These are 20 something year old guys and they were floored. They loved it, both sound and performance. They said it was by far the smoothest, especially the elimination of the first gear stumble. They also felt the increased power right away. I am going to get some lighter wheels and tires when cash allows, that should help as well. I'm just over in Hilliard, Dayton is an hour or so drive. pm me if you want to check it out.

This may be nothing, but I have noticed that driving with the sunroof and/or windows slightly open provides a considerable decrease in the drone.
I think it might have something to do with the fact that with the windows and sunroof closed, the drone reverberates inside of a closed space (the car's interior).
Hey. It works for me.

I thought that I had another rub with the magnaflow, maybe another long bracket, but after further investigation it seems like the heat shields are reverberating!!!
I took my "S" back to the muffler shop and none of us could find a rub. We bent the heat shields a little bit where they overlap but that doesn't seem to have helped.
We also checked the tightness of the heat shield mounting bolts but none seemed loose. After safety-wiring the rear mounts, the side to side movement seems much improved. No longer a problem.
I love the sound of the magnaflow but this is starting to drive me crazy. Do you think I can put some RTV or some kind of insulation between the shields to reduce the reverb?
Anyone else having this problem?
Once again thanks for your help.
Rich

Concerning the Cabin noise issue... I haven't heard any one else mention this, but it was brought up a LOOONG time ago, before I had my car:

MINI specifically engineered the S to have a thoaty growl to the exhaust. But they didn't do it just by making the exhaust louder. THat little open grille in the rear deck lid is engineered to allow you to hear more exhaust note. Also, if you've ever sat in the car with the doors closed, and then gotten out and walked behing it with the motor running, you can tell just how much sound is coming throiugh the floor. There is no way that in a "normal" car, an exhaust that is that quiet outside would be that loud inside.

My point is that I feel sure that blocking (tastefully) the sound vent in the rear deck lid, or perhaps even purchasing/swapping for a non-vented Cooper lid would help dampen the interior noise.

Has anyone tried this? Randy?

I want to know, because I rather like the Magnaflow, though I'd change those tips before putting it on my car.

This noise is being transmitted up into the car through the heat-shields from under the car.The tunnel where the exhaust is run is lined with a aluminum shield that is dimpled. I'm sure it isolates the heat from the exhaust but some how a resonation has been set up and this shield directs it into the cabin of the car. Sometimes at idle the gear shift actually vibrates. I'll have to get under there and see if I can isolate it somehow. We couldn't find it when it was on the lift.

Mine was installed today. My first comment is "it's LOUD". Very loud.
Will give it a few days to see what happens performance wise and to give myself some adjustment time.
Did I mention it's LOUD?
It definately needs to be dampened.
5th gear at 70 mph has always been a pleasure. It isn't any more

CCM,
I heard your pain....
It's loud and in higher gears/higher speeds as I mentioned...(more times than most people actually would have liked me to)... it's unbearable on long highway runs.
The drone is ...unwaivering and relentless.

Hi HO Quicksilver...
but....
do I see a new...entry on the horizon...UUC...for me  ????

Peace,
D

I have the Magnaflow and I think it sounds sweeter than ever. Music to my ears, a symphony of sounds. As has been pointed out to me before "loudness is subjective". One persons trash is anothers treasure and what a treasure this is. IMHO.
The only way to know if its right for you it to hear it in person, under various driving conditions.

As far as performance, it pumps out about the most ponies as any system out there, smooths out the acceleration and lets you experiercne a few more g-forces as your head snaps back and is pinned to the headrest.

I just took mine off this morning. Total 83 miles. I just couldn't handle it. I'm glad it works for others though. I posted it for sale in the marketplace if anyone is interested.

Does anyone have the magnaflow exhaust for the Mini Cooper (not the S) and is it that loud? I saw it on one of the performance sites and it looks cool, I might get it.

As the originator of this thread I bought the Magnaflow.

Be sure to read the whole post, it has a happy ending.

Got it on in about 1H15M and didn't feel/hear any leaks so I took her out for a spin.

Wow, loud.

Didn't seem right so I put her back up and did the hose-to-ear test and sure enough it was leaking where the centerpipe goes into the rear assembly. So I torqued them down a little more and stripped it.

Sh*t.
