Crappy Gas, or Pulley?

About a week after installing a Helix 15% pulley I've noticed an engine knock/ping when I mash the gas. It doesn't seem related to what gear I'm in, it just knocks a little when I stomp on it. I'm putting BP 93 octane in the tank- does it need an ECU remap to deal with the new pulley? No other performance mods on the car yet. (its an 05)

Joey

I was wondering about that. The MA the local dealer told me Shell was bad, buy BP, QT or Chevron. Seems everybody has a different take on who has good gas. Could it be regional?

Ooops. Really? So what kind of gas is best? (I have a BP station right next to my place) I was about to make an appointment with Eric to install my pulley but I really dont want to be dealing with lean gas problems.

Shell is great! I usually only buy Sunoco or Speedway/Marathon. Even if its cheaper at BP, or Citgo or anywhere else, i'll pay they extra 10 cents for 94 from Sunoco.

Red, I assume you're saying that BP is watered down? I'm 63, and since I was 13, people have been badmouthing without proof or substantiation one brand of gas or another! Back then it was "Don't buy Hess."

Red, as if the public is actually stupid enough to continue buying watered down BP (formerly Amoco) for 75 years? Come on!

The day the FTC or some other regulatory agency announces that they've tested BP and it's come up rotten, I'll have to take rumors like that with a HUGE grain of salt.

BTW, I use Shell myself.

You aren't hearing ping. I'm sure you're hearing something, but the ECU will not allow ping, it pulls timing way before it would ever get to the audible-to-you point.

Are you sure it's not your newly-muscled MCS ripping the time-space continuum? Happens to me from time to time...

Well, PROOF now exists. Standards and Emperical data.

See http://www.toptiergas.com/index.html

BMW, Honda, Toyota, and GM have set a standard for the best gas. The full specs are at that web site. Its mostly about deposits (not watered down gas). You want to buy gas from a station with a high turnover rate.

BP doesn't make the list.

Knock, ping...tomato, tomahto - it sounds just like the car did the time I put 87 oct. gas in it - (after Katrina there was a SERIOUS gas shortage for 2 or 3 days, and it was all I could find.)
I'm not sure if its a knock or a ping, or if there is a diff. for that matter, but I think most know what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the toptier.com referral, although I was only concerned about actual proof of water in BPs gasoline, not quality of additives, formulation, etc.

Good points too about what were getting post Katrina/Rita. There's been talk about relaxing the formulation regulations to avoid regional shortages.

Chad told me it was a good idea to replace the spark plugs with @ least one step colder plugs when doing the pulley install? Maybe this is an issue?
