15% pulley / acceleration help?

I just got a new mini cooper s two weeks ago and of course, I love it. This is my first manual car so I can't really compare it to any other manual cars and i'm still learning how things work. I'm also not that much of an automotive fanatic. Is first gear just to get the car rolling and then second gear where you really start to push it? What RPM does the MINI perform best at?

Which not to expensive mods will give the mini faster acceleration? I was looking to get a 15% reduction pulley since that seems to be very common and the most bang for the buck. If i got one put on would I feel it right away? And what gear/rpm will it perform best?

Thank's if you can help me out or direct me to a similar thread.

Thanks for the link Randy, I found the information there useful. My '06 MCS won't be in for a couple months, but I'll probably be in the same situation as dbirider is shortly after I take shipment =)

Thanks randy. That faq pretty much answered all my questions and more.

I think i'm just being a little paranoid since I have no experience driving a car other then an old 1980's chevy hand me down. I tried to push it hard today when accelerating to the speed limit on an empty road and it was fast! I usually kept it under 4 rpm's and shifted before it got to noisy because the loud noise got me nervous(lol). I still have 300 miles left till i'm done with the break in period and then I can really burn through gas. I think i'm going to hold off on the upgrades till I can get a better feel for the car.

Oh and theoretically what would happen if say... I had the car in 3rd gear(or any gear) and had the RPM's at the redline, and I continued to hold down the gas all the way?
