Drivetrain Raced 2 WRX's... ;-)
>>the 2003 wrx has 290hp & 40.2kgm of torque. 238km top speed.......not to mention the centre differential device & AWD, 0-100 in 5.x sec and 1/4 mile is 12.x sec....
>>
Not here in the US. The WRX still has 227 horses - even the 2004. The STI, however, has 300 HP (and I THINK 300 lbs of torque).

I think the '04 Subie has also been de-tuned to 227.
I beat 2 WRX so far and on both it's only because of driver error, (actually him crunch his gears, ouch)

Being a recent convert to the world of the WRC (World Rally Championship for those who don't know), the only thing I like about the WRX is the fact that it is the closest thing to a "true" rally car here in the states. I want desperately to have Peugeot bring their 206 over here to the states. Or maybe the new Skoda Fabia, or Citroen Xsarsa. If the U.S. (gov. that is) would get their heads out of their asses and realize that there are other great auto makers in the world and cut them a little slack in letting them bring their cars over here, I think there would be something for everyone's taste. Unfortunately right now the market in the sub- $35,000 range is a joke save for the MCS, EVO, and WRX. Hopefully with the huge demand for, and popularity of the MINI, we will get sport compacts in the States like the 206, Fabia and Xsara.
In regards to the new Sti: The hp limits of the WRC are 300hp. That makes the Sti a "true" rally car on hp alone.

>>wrx(non-sti) or s2000 faster in the states?

I'm assuming you're talking quarter mile...It would be very much a driver's race. S2K has more horsepower, WRX has more torque over a much broader range. The turbo in the WRX means it's less affected by altitude than the normally aspirated Honda, so if the race is at high altitude, the turbo motor has the advantage. S2K's tend to break rear differentials at the drag strip whereas the WRX loses first gear!
The Honda is more of a race car where the Subaru is more of a street car. On a race track, with two equal driver's, the S2K has an advantage. On a real road with lots of bumps and what not the WRX will be more forgiving.
It's funny how if you look only at the numbers, these cars are so similar, but when you look at them side by side they are so different. That Honda is one pretty car and the WRX...well...she's got a *really* nice personality!

There is no doubt that the MCS with pulley will blow away a WRX at speed. Just a few minutes ago I went from 70-110 mph in what seemed like 2 seconds!

Alot of WRX owners are doing mods that get them close to 300HP - my cousin being one of them. His car is shockingly fast, little black wagon that looks somewaht inconspicuous. He hasn't brought it down to Englishtown yet, still working on more mods. But it is one sick car. Will be interesting to see what kind of times it gets in the 1/4 mile. I suspect a modded WRX will edge out the modded MCS, but so much depends on the driver.

And greatgro, I believe you when you say a pulley-modded MCS will take a stock WRX at speed. The WRX (in the USA) has gear ratios that are far too tall for optimal performance, particularly at the top end. However, talking about a modded car vs. a stock car is rather silly, don't you think?

Uh...maybe. But then again, if you run into a WRX on the street, it's kind of tough luck for him if his isn't modded, right?
Also, a modded MCS COULD cost less than a WRX also which then makes it a more valid argument.

Street racing is stupid. Especially at high speeds. So I guess my reply is a resounding "whatever".

I agree. But then again this thread is about street racing of some sort against the WRX. So again I think it is a valid comparison.

I had the opportunity to race two WRX in one day!
I knew I would get my axx wooped but still tried for the fun of it.
The first WRX looked stock..he came out of no where behind me while I was driving 70mph. Then slows down next to me and gives me that look.. :-
So I waited until the freeway was more open with less cars and rev..ed up shifting from 6th to 4th gear..quickly reached 100 and ...yes he was try to chase my behind..haha...after shifting to fith doing 110 in the tunnel...he just couldn't keep up...for the next 3 min..!!
i then switched freeways and out comes another WRX from no where (most likely from an freeway entry I passed up) this guy does the same thing...pulls up next to me but I can tell he's not stock..it looked like racing rims, lowered, exhaust, and gauges galore...!
I again reved...but this time I felt that I was in reverse man!!
:-| speechless...!
Can't wait to put a turbo on my S!

Any punk kid who can spend 25 to 50% of the $ on his WRX that you spent on your MCS is going to make you look slow. Any body that can spend what the works package costs on thier WRX will make you look stupid. And their are alot of those out there. To upgrade the WRX like this you don't even have to be a mechanic.
One can get a used 2002 WRX with low miles on it for 18K$. Then put 5K$ and have a low 12 high 11 second car depending on driver ability that is, and very fun to drive.

Seen it firsthand.... a couple of weeks ago, went on a mountain run with a wrx club and boy, those things move... even had a brand new sti there.... in any case, they just blew us away.....

I keep hearing people talk about how bad the 225 HP WRX motor is, but one thing I'm trying to find out is how their driveline loss compares to that of the FWD MINI? Anybody know for sure? I would suggest that once you figure in the AWD driveline loss, then the power difference betweeen the two cars won't be as significant as folks like to think.
Drop a shorter 1st gear into the MCS, and I bet it would be pretty darned quick off the line... plus, no turbo lag!
Of course, I'm not positive about this... just sort of thinking out loud...

I now have hard data for both the MCS and my WRX on the track the same day.
Bandimere Speedway 5800ft ASL (that means it is slow up here especially if your car is naturally aspirated)
WRX- mods
18" Forged Rims Falken Azenis Rubber
Catless vishnu uppipe
Catless 3" divorced bosal Downpipe
Catless 3" Mid pipe
Greedy 3.2" "cat" back
MBC set to 18psi
Cooper S
Magnaflow
Madness intake
Alta Pulley
Stock rims and run flats
WRX - 3370lbs with driver)
60' - 1.87
1/8 MI - 8.89
1/8 MPH - 79.1
1/4 - 13.89
1/4 MPH - 99.80
MCS - 2780lbs with dirver)
60'-2.49
1/8-mi - 10.71
1/8-mph - 69.8
1/4 - 15.78
1/4 - 94.1
For comparison 2000 Dodge Viper (ran next to me in the WRX)
60-ft 2.01
1/8 mi 9.041
1/8 mph 76.37
1/4 13.98
1/4 mph 102.5
The WRX obviously slaughtered the MINI. there is another guy around here who has Raced me in his stock red MCS. I kept drawing him for the first 3 runs about a month ago, it was pretty unappeasing for my wife who thought the mini would do much better than it did.
However if you take a look at the numbers the story is quite interresting.
This is really interesting, notice the last 1/8 mile the wrx only picked up 20 mph and covered the last 1/8 in 5 sec flat. Where as the MCS picked up over 24 mph and covered the last 1/8 in just over 5 sec. This shows that the WRX is really slowing down (comparitively) after 70ish MPH, where as the MINI is just getting rolling. Similar 1/8 - 1/4 MPH pick up to the Viper which was running me down pretty hard by the end of the 1/4. Just thought you guys might want to know.
