Removing Resonator

Ok, quick question...

has anyone simply taken out the resonator from a stock MC exhaust system? ho does it sound compared to stock? i would assume it sounds better, but i think it may have a wierd sound due to having a factory muffler still.

would removing the resonator effect and of the car's computer components? (IE throw off O2 sensor readings) i dont think there are any sensors past the resonator.

any input?

Resonator delete

I got my local muffler shop remove my resonator and install a race pipe. After this I bought a cat-less header and got him to make me a pipe with a cat in it so I can interchange them depending what i am doing; daily driving or racing.

1-ball

removing the resonator is commonly known as a 1-ball exhaust.

sound - tad louder / deeper.
few hp gains
weight loss around 20lbs.
cheap mod - an insert tube is sold (125.00) that then directs the exhaust straight to the muffler.

I thought the 1-ball modification was only for MCS's? Last time I looked under my MC, it only came with one ball.

Right you are... . Maybe though there is a similar mod for the MC.

I was wondering about the same thing . I noticed that some vendors sell a pipe supersprint called a resonator eliminator and have been real curious to what the HP/Sound gains would be from such a thing.

Any info would be great.
Thanks.

20 pounds of weight eliminated?

Does this mean everything aft of the cat, or just the resonator itself? If it's just the resonator, then removing it is worth it just for that! Does anyone feel like they got a performance gain by removing it? It looks like a straight- through resonator- I can't imagine losing any power over that. -Jeffy.

The 20 lb weight loss is for the one ball mod on the MCS, not removing the resonator on the MC. IIRC from the Grassroots Motorsports article, the entire stock MC cat-back exhaust only weighs in the neighborhood of 30 lbs. I'd guess 4-6 lbs (at most) might be saved by removing the resonator on a MC.

Removing the resonator will add volume, but probably won't change the tone of the exhaust.

I would expect that to be unbearable loud. Close to an open exhaust. After all, the muffler, muffle. I think

I can't help you on the "removing resonator" only part but I can say that I have run the Supersprint race pipe (no resonator) with the supersprint muffler on my 02 Cooper with about 25,000 miles on it and no computer problems, fault codes etc.!

I have gotten a lot of complements on my exhaust with no resonator. Most have been at the track when I come off from a good session....but at idle I notice its a little more raspy at idle. I also took out the heat shield from the header back to the muffler to get extra sound inside the cabin which I can feel coming in through the shifter linkage.......

Good luck on your decision though.....not really gonna see anything more than maybe 2hp gain on the dyno......

Cheers,

thanks for the reply, just what i was looking for.

i was just going to do it to change the tone a bit, i'm still not looking for heaps of horsepower. just a litte more pep perhaps, (top end most likely) nd a nice sound to it.
