There has been talk about whether rain water will get into the air box when doing the mod Randy suggests.

I haven't done the mod yet, "CUZ RANDY IS OUT OF BMP INTAKES!!!!", just kidding Randy, but I have done some wet weather testing. Since I live in Western Washington, perhaps the wettest place on earth, water migration is a concern of mine. And where better to check to see if it is problem for the rest of the world.

Over the last few weeks we have had some real downpours that are more than our typical drizzle. I have been on the freeway while the down pour is going on and right after when there is a lot of standing water on the roadway. And to make it worse I have purposely followed tractor-trailer rigs when they are throwing up lots of water. I have pulled off immediately after following them for some time and checked the area, and although not bone dry everywhere, there is little or no water in the area the air box opens into.

Also my car spends the night out in the rain when its wet out so as not to increase the humidity to much in my shop. Again water is not a problem.

So I am sure this is a non-issue with the air box mod,,,,,no-one should have a problem with sucking water into the intake.

Hope this satisfies some of the concerns.

John

Good deal! I would see water getting into the intakes if it was down under the car, but the BMP intake is still in the engine bay correct? It'd be pretty hard for water to get in there.

the concern is whether intaking air from the windshield vent through a modded (perforated) firewall panel will also take in water.

I haven't looked, but, is there a drain in the bottom of the box by the windshield? IOW, should water accumulate in there would it naturally drain out?

I'm actually not as concerned as many might be. I've ridden motorcycles with open airbox tops in **downpours** without ill effect. The kind of rain that actually has soaked the leading edge of my air filter.

I suspect you'd really have to ingest a lot of water to actually soak the filter enough to start getting enough water in the intake to make a difference.

Jeff

ps: Thanks John for taking the time to do the research!! Off to see the SBowl.

jlm,

Since there is no shortage of rain in the Pac NW, I will do some impromptu testing after I get my BMP installed with the air box mod.

More to come,,,,,,,

The Raiders better get in gear!!!!

Got my BMP intake today, THANKS RANDY. It's installed and the backing plate is modified. So all we need now is some rain. Who woulda thunk that in good ol' Western Washington we would be short on rain. Weather man says no rain for about 5 days, woooo hooo! But that means any checking on the water migration issue will have to wait.

I'll let you know when the monsoon starts up again.

John
