Short shifter install question

I just got a BMP short shifter in the mail and am hoping to do the install maybe on Monday. All the instructions I see say to jack it up and put it on stands.
My question is: is there any reason I need to get the weight off the wheels? Or can I use my ramps with no problem? Also, I got it used, so I didn't get the little tube of grease. Do I need a particular type? I have a tube of white grease that I got to lube the metal drawer slides on my work bench. Will that be ok?
